Noticed how the media is moving to the term SUV in their news stories ? This is Australia, why cant they stick to Four Wheel Drive ? Teenagers get criticised for using Americanisms but journalists are just as bad.
Sorry for the indulgence, but that's my gripe for the day.

Makes you wonder of Australian journalists are really using their own material, or just re-hashing what they are fed from overseas. "SUV" is not a term I want to hear over here.

Toyota has sort of jumped on the bandwagon with their "AUV" moniker for the Hilux.

There was an article I think by the RACV explaining their usage of the two terms - 4wd is applied to a 4wd in the traditional sense, and SUV is being applied to crossover vehicles like Ford Territory, Holden Adventra etc, or 2wd variants of 4wd vehicles. All a bit blurry.

Which is a bastardisation of the term, because in the US all 4wds are referred to as SUVs!

For me they will always be a 4WD - I've even been able to convert my US born wife to the term!

Found the reference:

http://www.racv.com.au/Coporate/RoyalAutoArticle.asp?d_id=3017

"This is a vexing topic, as it is hard to find one term which satisfies all the different vehicles that fall into the category. The Australian industry seems determined to market many of the products as SUVs, and what does one do with the 2WD Ford Territory, which has identical body shape and capacity to its 4WD twin? RoyalAuto’s preference is for 4WD when the relevant vehicle truly reflects the traditional abilities of the class in less-than-perfect going, but there are vehicles which, despite having a 4WD (or all-wheel-drive) system, are little more than high-riding station-wagons, and for this the term SUV seems more appropriate. The tables you referred to carried the designation of the official Australian industry statistician for that vehicle class. – Jeremy Bourke"

So they apply it to some 4wds, not all. I guess they mean Foresters etc.

Yup - certainly do! I was under the impression that when you'd bought one it wasn't going to cost you any more money. I was wrong! :)

Mine comes from St Louis, MO or thereabouts....

Does yours still make you apple pie every so often?

Soon people will be saying - “I think I’ll upgrade my SUV (Patrol cab chassis) fitted with the new Winnebego (motor home), gas (fuel) it up and head on down the Interstate 1 (Pacific highway) for my 4 weeks vacation (holiday)”.

or – “It’s about time I fitted new springs to the Landcruiser Pickup (Ute)”.

or – “My new AUV (Toyota dual cab ute) sure looks ugly but I like the color (no u in colour)”.

It’s only a matter of time and we’ll be driving on the wrong side of the road.

All tongue in cheek ;-)

The only good thing about SUV is that Scruby will not know what vehicle they are talking about.
EG. You cannot cal a Suburu Forrester a REAL 4wd. so you see its a suv er small urban vehicle.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

What does "RAV" stand for - as in Toyota RAV4?

"Recreational Action Vehicle" or something else typically-Toyota inane?

I’m postin’ here today
To offer some advice
On the use of our language
Being P C, and being just... nice

Don’t know much about poetry
Don’t know much about prose
Don’t know much about rhyming
So let’s just see, how it all goes

It used to be when I was young
To say FU%$ was was very, very wrong
But now, when here reading recent posts
SUV, has now taken the gong

We swapped Hood for Bonnet
And then Trunk,f or a Boot
We went from Gas to Petrol
Then Pick-Up to Ute

General Purpose Vehicle
Got shortened to GP
Even that was to long
So now, we say JEEP

Toyota’s became TOJO’s
L R became Landie
So we’ve changed all the names
Aren’t we just dandy

But when tit’s he yanks to do it
Goodness gracious me...
They’ve called my precious 4 by
A Goddamn SUV!!!

I always assumed that SUV was another name for "softroaders" and was used to differeniate "real 4WDs" from softroaders

You got love them Yanks - they can come up with something so unrelated to reality in terminology.

When is a 4X4 not a 4X4, not an AWD? When you can MANUALLY select the mode of operation, when its selected by the vehicle 'systems'? How do you tell the which is which some vehciles come as one of more in dfferent trim levels? What happens to the vehicle designation if you retrofit one of the other factory systems for that vehcile - does it suddenly 'change?'

Confusion confusion.......

Lets look at our favourite 'mentors' terms;

SUV = SPORTS UTILITY VEHICLE

So lets break this down;

SPORTS: now most proper 4WD hardy rate the SPORTS rating - most are slower than your avrage 1.5L car. mmmmm no SPORTS in that - a bit off the mark with accuracy

UTILITY: Well some but VERY few are actually UTILITIES. Most are wagons or traytops, not utilities - at least on Oz!. Seems again they missed the majority of the mark again.

VEHICLE: Well how could they get that wrong! Score 1 for accuracy to date!

and the other term PICKUP

Thats what you are looking for at some sleesey bar to satisfy your 'urges'. That sort of activity hardy relates a vehicle, and then only remotely to the vehicles use.

I guess its a bit 'complex' on the other side of the pond & they need to do something to be the centre of the universe (still), so our good freinds the Yanks 'invent' things. Its a real bugger they got it mostly wrong in terminology,

And we dont want to follow blindly in their footsteps - well guess what?? Seems some are well down that path (without even starting to get political at all).

Yes Mr Scrubby now has a real problem, as 4WD=4X4=SUV (in the media's terms). He owns a SUV, & he's been protesting about 4WD's???????

:-))

Dave
