A friend of mine has a Landrover County & is considering swapping the V8 petrol for a diesel.
Has anybody had any experience in doing this & what, if any pitfalls are there?

There are several companies doing swaps on Jap cars.. Should be able to do Pom's too
I got a price for Chevvy 6.5 Non Turbo.V8. In Door.. 4 days .out door... Full rebuild. Papers. H/D Clutch. 120A h/D Alternator. $20,000...... for a 3 ltr Patrol.
Second hand Cheaper. New Dearer..
Different Veh's Different prices... Get 4WD Magazine ,and do some pricing..
Mine was in Q'Land. They do them in NSW.Vic and WA. that I know of..
If you don't want a chevvy. They will probably fit one of the trade ins they take for the Chevvy's.. ASK. and ye shall be rewarded.... Maybe.

Mate of mine (our 4x4 club's secretary and member on here "Seashells") has recently got his disco back after a 2 year delay in getting his V8 replaced by a TD5.
The motor slotted into the car within a few days...........it was the electronics that caused the problems.......bloody computers wouldn't "talk" to each other. Sensors everywhere were telling the computer that the doors had been tampered with, speedo pick-up was different, so puter spat the dummy on that too......the list went on and on.
He had to pay the Adelaide landrover "specialist" place to get an expensive bit of electronic kit from Saudi Arabia (or some other place over that way).........it was a total nightmare.
He has it back now and it seems to be working okay.
I'd imagine the defender would present similar issues.
BE CAREFUL

To the best of my knowledge from my inlaws, the izusu engine slots straight in. From what I understand if you have basic mechanical knowledge you should be able to do it yourself. Any landrover specalist should be able and willing to help with advice etc

Well, the army uses the Isuzu motor, but if it was me, I'd swap the whole thing for a Tojo - or a Nissan - or... anything, really!

Why would you ditch a Petrol V8 for a Diesel, apart from the whole fuel consumption Issue.

Don’t get me wrong I love a good diesel engine, but swapping petrol V8 for anything less than a V8 diesel, don’t think so.

By merely chipping the TD5 motor a range of power and torque upgrades are available that match Toyo V8 and the big Nissan petrol.

My County was previously a V8 and now has a Isuzu 4BE1 3.6l diesel. Previous owner did the swap. He bought an adaptor plate for the bellhousing from Zenith Engineering in Brisbane. I believe they have long since run out of stock.

Try Andersons Landrover in Hervey Bay/Torquay/Pialba (somewhere there) or British Offroad (Forest Glen, north of Brisbane) for engines/adaptors.

I get around 11.6 l/110 around town and 13l/100 when towing a fully laden campertraileron the highway.

Things to consider:
* The donor engine will probably be 24v so starter may need rewiring for 12v
* The sump pan may foul the diff on articulation and may need a bit cut out of it
* The oil filter may need relocating to clear the front diff on artiuculation
* The front springs may need upgrading to compensate for the heavier donk
* If you ever want to turbo it, you may need to lose the factory aircon as the turbo fouls the aircon

Friend of mine has a Landrover 110 with a 4.2 Nissan diesel, great truck considering its a Landrover. He has several Landrovers and the engine of this one is the most reliable. Earlier this year, he blew the 2.5TD in the Disco they have and out of warrenty as well - ouch went the credit card.

If you can, try and find a isuzu 4BD1T out of an isuzu truck. You will need the adaptors as previuosly mentioned but they are hard to find.
I think they also only suit the older 4 speed LT95 transmission.
It might even be worth trying to buy an old series 3 stage 1 diesel for the engine and adaptor bits.
You could also fit a 300 Tdi deisel but them you will problably need to get the gearbox/transfercase as well.

Cheers

I would say stick with the V8 and just do a gas conversion - a whole lot cheaper to get a gas system than a different engine - and will have a choice of dual fuel - with longer range between fills.
