ACDC,
As you can tell i am guessing a bit regarding the motor size. I know it is efi and it is the smaller motor than the 4.2lt, have you any ideas what size motor it may be????

Chances are u are talking about the 3 litre Patrol. Same motor as the commodore and skyline ran.

OK, I'll have a go.

I owned a 92 GQ 3.0L petrol. Motor known as the RB30.

It is not EFI. Petrol Carby motor, develops 100 kW and 223 Nm of torque. Lasts forever, 240 km is nothing. They have been known to do 400 plus without a prob.

It is not economical, works hard lugging such a heavy car. Expect around 20L per100km. Performance is ordinary.

However, having said all that, it is a a very competent off road vehicle. Lots of space, well appointed for its time and as tough as nails.

They will tow light loads happily. I used to tow a 6x4 trailer loded to the max and it was comfortable.

In short, one of the best vehicles I have ever owned.

Cheers,

Jim.

strange they didnt use the efi motor straight from the skyline - would have made it a better package especially as there would have been hardly any carby motors if any still going round in 92. Or was there a reason for it?

Cost Dave,

Nissan were knocking out out a 7 seater Patrol with a lot of fruit for under 30 large at the time. It was a pretty competitive package at the time. Got me in and I wasn't disappointed.

It would have been been better with the Skyline EFI motor delivering 114 kW, but it didn't.

Cheers'

Jim.

G'day Jimmbo,

My guess is it's the 3.0lt, one of the better 6cl motors around for reliability and longetivity. It's the same motor holden used in the VL commodore range, overhead cam etc.
I've still got my GQ with this very motor in it, in carburetted form, gets 6.5km/lt on highway, no roof rack, loaded for camping, 5.3km/lt towing 1.5tn caravan at 100-110kph.
Power isn't too bad but it does like to rev, works best between 2500 and 4500rpm, that's not to say it doesn't work under this, it is quite comfortable chugging around in 4wd at 1000rpm and has a surprising amount of torque at this rpm range. It has a nice smooth, reasonably strong pull from idle right through the rev range and I find I rarely take mine over 4000-4200rpm.
Mine has 245k on it and is still good as gold, it has had regular oil and filter changes every 10k, if serviced correctly it is quite common to get over 300k on them without complaint.
Check for leaky power steering pump, cracked fan blades and leaky clutch slave cyl, rust in the rear side window frames, other than these common faults they are one of the best value for money 2nd hand 4wd you will get.

Geez, 2 replies and a followup in the time it took me to write the above, gotta learn to type quicker methinks!
Agree with Jimbo, have had mine for 8 yrs, and have to be the best vehicle I ever owned.
Gotta remember Davoe, they were marketed as a family budget vehicle, fuel injection in the late 80's-early 90's was exy, they were trying to keep the costs down to a bare minimum.

Funny you mention the fan blades. i was back in adelaide having a run of my old skline I sold to Ma and Pa but it was running like absalute crap not silky smooth these motors are renowned for. Thought about spark plugs leads etc and as i was looking around noticed 2 blades missing - Yep that will do it!
The price/fuel injection thing makes sense

A damn good motor the RB30 and being a carby one allows the likes of a Holley or Weber to be fitted for improved performance and economy.

Properly tuned, Nissan claimed that a 50c coin can be standing on its side on the tappet cover and won’t fall over when the motor is revved – could just about do it to the VL Commodore I owned.

The Commodore engines suffered from cracked cylinder heads due to the baffle plate in the radiator falling down in the tank and not allowing the coolant to cool properly – the radiator was a cross-flow style whereby the tanks were vertical not upper and lower style.

If you buy the vehicle make sure the cam belt is in good condition or have it replaced along with the tensioner – usually changed at every 80,000km.
