Gday,

I wanting to fit a set of Baja Claw Radials onto my Hilux. 31X10.5R15, just wanting to know how these perform offroad and onroad in comparason to other MT's.

My next option is the GY MT/R's but I would like to consider the Baja Claw Radials first.

Thanks

Hi Bryan,
I run an 80 with 285/75 GY MTR's as daily driver tyres and also use them offroad.

GY MTR - On Road:
They are very quiet for a muddie, they wear quite well, handle well and stop well. Certainly i cannot lock them up on a dry road.
On a wet road they give plenty of feel. l dont drive aggressively in the wet, so cannot say they wont lock up but they still handle well

GY MTR - Off Road:
On gravel roads they are like any thing else, on rock they are pretty good too.
They are quite good, (no match for simex / swampers though) until you play in really sticky horribly slippery hilly conditions, you may be upset! We drove the Nobs Trk on Q'Bday in Vic (downhill) just after being graded. The conditions were as mentioned above. I dropped to 17psi with ladder chains on the rear. It was still very slippy, as the treadblocks fill up with the clay. Guys with simex etc drove down on low pressure.

On rocky hills - up & down at 23psi. They are great. Loads of feel, resistant to a slate slashing in a creek l came across. Boulder steps taken in confidence.

In snow, they are good - raw snow is grippy. On ice.........fit those chains!
Not tried them in sand.

I read articles comparing wall strength (resistance to cuts etc) and a US guys thoughts as an every day tyre and was sold.

I paid $325 fitted for my size.

Baja Claws:
I haven't tried them, however one of our cars on the Nobs trip mentioned above. Brand new (1 day old tyres (33")), No chains, slipped off the same track that everybody else passed through (carefully). Later in discussion we talked about lateral grip (offroad). Baja Claw dont seem to have as much as some - BFG muddies etc.

However on road they seemed quiet, as l asked them specifically about that, before the accident.

Hope this helps
Cheers

Goodyear lists the MT/R's as a "Maximum Traction Radial", not as commonly believed, "Mud Terrain Radial". They are OK in mud, but not one of the better tyres for that purpose.

If you are after a mud terrain with a similar tread pattern to MT/R's, consider the Simex Centipede MT's, only available in 31x10.5R15 (actual dia is very close to that, 30.5")

Baja Claws were designed for rocks, not mud.

Forgot to mention, Simex MT's $165 each, buy a couple as spares, or buy some secondairs with the money you save so you can really air the tyres down (I've run 4 psi before...)

Most tyre places will get them in, but in Vic try TTF (The Tyre Factory) anywhere from $160-170.

Full name: Simex Centipede M/T

Considering the Claw is a 10%onroad/90% offroad tire, aggressive (noisey) they would be bleep on the road. They would wear much faster, would suck in the wet since theres no rubber on the road - they are an offroad tire. Dont expect them to handle on the road.

Same as my Simex's handle like dung on road and are noisey as hell.

MTRs by far best all rounder.

What brand are your simex tyres? Was looking at them on the net once and thought they would be expensive but $165 per corner ... that sound 'cheap' - have i missed something?

They are Simex's but the type is Jungle Trekker 2's. About $360 on rim each. 34x11.5x15's.

But measure over 35, and more than 12.5 wide.
