Hi Raster Man,

I was in the same position as you around a year ago, except my HF is an 8727 - both yours and mine are old units, but mine worked fine when I needed it and it was a great companion whilst travelling. Many people use these units. Many other people pay a lot more and are probably very happy with their setup too.

You must visit - and are advised to join - the VKS 737 network which will guide you on everything you need.

Using these machines turns out to be pretty easy once they are set up.

Turn it on.
Select the frequency you want. Make sure your aerial is also set to the same frequency - unless you have a fancy big fat thing called an autotune.
Listen to make sure no one else is talking.
Hold down the transit button on the mike and speak loudly and clearly directly into the mike.

You've got the two most common frequencies used on VKS, (5455, 8022) so don't need to open the box to change anything.

Like the previous post said, go to the Codan Group and ask whatever you want. There's an Exploroz member that provides heaps of useful contributions to that group and outed himself recently!!

An amatuer radio group in Melbourne area FAMPARC make antenna as club fundraisers to suit VKS frequencies and one of theirs served me well - although I didn't drive with it in place and screwed it onto the base each time I used the radio. This was to suit my own circumstances at the time, and was not any real extra hassle.

Enjoy your learning curve.

Tim

Hi Raster Man,
I can copy the manual if you like; email me on gezza90 at tpg dot com dot au.
You will need a tapped helical whip antenna; basically a tap for each frequency, tho 5300 and 5360 can share the same tap, being close enough in frequency to not matter. Also you'll need a spring base. Both are not cheap.
Firms like Terlin make a generic antenna, made to work most RFDS and VKS737 channels.
Terlin antennas
Cheers,
Gerry
