Hi all, we just took delivery of our GQ 4.2 diesel turbo. when you put the windows down more than an inch and go over bumps, they rattle like crazy! (they are electric). When I say rattle, i mean that they sort of rock towards the inside of the cabin then towards the outside. I think that if we went off-road they would smash, its that bad. Its almost like there are no rubbers in the window frame (there are!).

any ideas?

My experience with this problem has been that the Bailey channel (black velvety stuff that the glass slides in) is worn out and/or the anchoring bracket for the window frame down in the door has come loose. Also check to see that the motors are secure.

I remember when my dad got a gq only a few years old, the windows wobbled like that quite ferociously when driving along with window partly down..

Could just be the way the earlier ones were (as long as yours is one of the earlier on).. quite sure they improved as the models went on.

I'd pull door lining off and check it out, could be just a screw come slightly loose or similar.

GU's do it also!! I have found I have to make a decision. Leave the window up or leave the window down!

Check the following:

Bailey channels are either worn out or have slid down the metal frame. Replacing worn ones will reduce your rattle. (not cheap though)

Check for loose or missing bolts that hold the window assembly in place, common for them to work loose or be missing from previous repairer.

Also check guides where wheels slide in, the wheels can be worn causing window to rattle. Sometimes some grease in the guide helps things out a bit.

Personally from my expierences, I found the best way to stop rattles is to keep window closed OR fully opened.

My first GQ was shocking for rattles in windows. Damn near drove me nuts when i had a passenger who likes a half opened window.

This GQ i have now is still tight as new. So no rattles yet.

Price new bailey channel rubbers from nissan, then look around for after market prices, I am sure there are people who do them for restorations of old vehicles. Ask some trimmers for prices and contacts.
Not a hard job to do, can get messy if your doors have proof coating in them, other than that, it takes time.
P.S.. if your gona fix it yourself, make sure your ignition is off while ur working, you dont want a kid playing with the window swtich while your hands are in the door.

think i found it. one of the bolts that holds the power steering motor in place is sheered off and the other was loose! tightened the remaining bolt, and bobs your uncle!!!
