ALLRIGHTY - mates Hilux 2.8 diesel has a problem(92 ) - here is what happened
Climbing a very steep
hill -- ( wall face in a quarry ) then he hears a clunk clunk --- comes back down the
hill as he can not continue up -- tried to drive forward -- one wheel locks up drive backwards -- rolls a bit then locks up
takes it out of 4x4 unlocks hubs --- free rolls --- we are guessing -- that's ok --- should be able to limp home. He then discovers that his steering is VERY limited
by the time we hit main road he has no left turn AT ALL can turn right ---- then steer back to straight but can not get any further left at all -- so got a tow home from
Lithgow to Blacktown ( expensive on a Sunday ) we had no
tools so could not do a roadside diff strip down
I suspect that the Lokka Diff locks may be stuck on one side ( mechanical not air operated )
as my friend and I are both Fitter machinists we shall pull it down when time permits -- does anyone have any advice as to what to look for ? where should maybe start first ? anyone had problems with these things before ?
Frank

Don,t blame the diff just yet, I'm more inclined to think maybe a CV joint has collapsed. Barnray

Auto lockers (unlockers) have been known to destroy cv's.

I don't see how a busted diff locker would stop you from turning (I may be wrong). I too would be more inclinde to look at your CV joints.

hi frank.
as above it does not sound like a diff problem. 92 lux may be solid axel so maybe a free wheeling hub problem a possibility.

hi there boc1971,you dont mention wether it has ifs or solid diff up front. Take note of the other guys info if it is ifs. If it's solid front end check the steering dampner up front. I bent my'n on my 89 lux same shape as yours with solid front end and was very hard to turn left as I bent the dampner and crushed the outside which wouldn't allow it to travel back inside it's self same as a shock absorber, even though it is located between the diff and steering arm a rock can still come up from under neath and crush it or if you come down on some thing hard and bend it that way. Hope you find the problem.Regards Vitara

Thats why they say not to put lockers in luxs there drive shafts arnt strong enough compared to patrols. Don't know wether this is a common problem with hiluxs when running lockers or wether it's down to how they are treated?? Vitara
