Hi All,

I have a manual Patrol 3.0TD which came standard with 265/70/R16 Bridgestone tyres.

The tyres are due for replacement, and I thought it best to replace them with BF Goodrich AT's 275/70/R16 tyres (same size as petrol version Patrol)

Just wondering if anyone else has increased their tyre size on the 3.0TD manual Patrols, and wondering how it has affected the gear ratio's of the car whilst off road driving.

All advice appreciated if this is a good way to go, or could be a major disaster

Thanks

TonyG

Tony,

The 275s have the same diameter as the 265s so no change to gear ratios etc. I chncged to 275 BFG from new. An option would be 265/75/R16s which are significantly cheaper (no idea why) and probably peform as well. After all the difference in width is only 1cm.

G'day

I have 275/70/16's on my GUIV (8 inch wide rims) since new . According to my GPS the speedo can be up to 2kph slow (varies with tyre pressures up to spot on). No clearance problems or performance/handling issues. There is more sidewall bulge with the 275's than the 265's. I use BFG A/T's (KO's).

Is 275/70 a common tyre size? About 1/2 doz of us all run 285/75 ( 4 out of 5 of us have 3.0l Patrols) with no real issue with gearing. You may as go a little bigger to get that little bit extra!!

Tony,

Have a look here. It should answer all of your questions about size differences etc.

I am in Nissan 4wd club (www.nissan4x4.com) and more than 90% of Patrols
run 285/75/R16 tyres here...

I was lead to believe that tyres could only exceed the diameter of the tyres listed on the plcard by 15mm? If that is the case how do you go with insurance? I have a deep distrust of insurance companies and believe if they can get out of paying a claim they will, as they are profit, not service orientated. Is there a way around this (engineer's certificate) or is it not a problem?
Cheers.

You will need an engineer certificate to be properly covered and also list the tires size on the insurance. I got 265/65/R17 standard tires
and a second set of 265/75/R16 listed on the insurance paper.

I run 285/75/R16s BFG all round and have no problems at all.
