Afternoon all.

A quick question for all you knowledgeable Victorians... has anyone got a recommendation or two for travelling some interesting trails between Mansfield and Bright? I will probably be able to get out there this long weekend (Labour Day for us Canberrans on Monday 3rd), travelling with a Hilux (on muddies), a Paj (lifted & on muddies too), a Disco (on all terrains) and a Patrol (all terrains as well). Given most of the trails in the Alpine National Park will still be closed (not open until November from memory), what would you recommend? We have no firm plans yet - happy to move camp each night, or base ourselves in one spot...

T-Bone.

TBone. Difficult to drive between Mansfield & Bright at this time of year due to track closures & high rivers. There are quite a few harder tracks open in the Jamieson to Woods Point area but can be tricky/dangerous in the wet.
I'd suggest base camping in the Buckland Valley & spending a few days up behind Mt Buffalo & Bright. A few challenging tracks that will be open are Buffalo Range, Mt Buggery, Paddys Hill, Demon Ridge, Wet Gully track, Cobbler/Abbeyard track & Dandongadale/Buffalo Divide track.
Don't attempt the Camp creek track crossing of the Buffalo river unless you like swimming ;-)

Most of the other posts cover it. Your options are very limited at this time of year.

If you want to get out and have a play there are some challenging tracks around Bright itself but mainly in logging and pine plantation areas some of which the companies are restricting access to.

Really best to wait til November & December to experience this fantastic area rather than seeing it piecemeal now.

There's one of my Trek notes in the Victoria East section of Notes that does just what you want.

Mansfield to Harietville over a long weekend - including Wonnangatta & Talbotville.

Great trip. Check it out.
