After a loose arangement made a few weeks ago to meet with Rod at Southern Cross on Saturay I took off Friday Night. I spent an absalutly soaking night at Condarnin rock just South of Yellowdine and was treated to a 4 hour Electrical storm at times very close. The next day I met up with Rod and followed him Out to Faye Bluff in the Die Hardy ranges off of the Evenston/Bullfinch rd where we made camp in the shadow of this immpressive bluff standing about 640m above sea level featuring a sheer cliff where it drops down. We spent time here climbing over it investigating the sheer cliffs and undercut caves and crackings in the layred iron rich rock which in one place makes a thin chasm about 1/2 a metre wide and 10-15m high which dissapears out of sight.
It was then onto the Helena Aurora ranges via some roads and station tracks stopping to check out old dams and minesites. We drove around the eastern side of the ranges passing by the immpressive bungalbin hill where we looked for a suspected Meteor crater shown up as a perfect circle by Google Earth. We managed to find the location but it appeared the formation was natural rather than intersteler.
It was then back to the Western side of the ranges and through a couple of decent mudholes following a pituresque track that leads to the top of the ranges where a campsite exists amongst the surprising amount of trees at the top.
Next morning fun had come to an end and it was back home via the road to Koolynobbing where we parted just South so I could head to Yellowdine after getting sent on a recce of the southern end of the Koolynobbing ranges and Lake Seabrook (wont talk about that eh Rod)
The trip was led by Rod who really knew his stuff about the area and made it more enjoyable than bumbling around trying to find places along with all the wildflowers and great scenery and even better company it was a good time

Mate your 1/2 way there Here are the co - ordinates courtesy of Rod W who went out of his way to promote the area awhile back. Cant understand why the post hasnt generated more intrest seeing as it is probably clo9ser to perth than it is Kalgoorlie
North from Southern Cross to Bullfinch Then take the Bullfinch Evanston rd to 50j 0732245 6685001 and follow the track west approx to somwhere around (depends where you want to camp) to 50j 07238404 6690148. This is not the only way in but is the easiest. There is quite a few tracks around but you will see faye Bluff from some distance and should be able to work it out. Fantastic area especially for its close proximity to perth

G'day Errol,

Met you a couples of years back now one Saturday night at the soak near York.

By what I recall your group like to take pets out on trip. You may not be aware but the Die Hardy Range and Faye Bluff region in now part of the Mt Manning Nature Reserve which is an "A" Class Reserve. I assume you know what it means with pets. 1080 has also been laid in the region, so be a responsible pet owner and leave them at home.

I assume that you have been to Pigeon Rock and whislt up on top looking east to the Die Hardy range have seen the sudden southern facing drop off, thats Faye Bluff. Its named after the wife of the previous owner of Dimels Station.

This was my 4 or 5 trip to the bluff (previous trips its just been a quick in an out), I wanted to get some decent photos of the Bluff which required walking further afield to the east and west. The weather can also affect the features of the bluff and how its appears in the photo. We did a two night which allowed a full day to further explore and photo. The day turned out to be a beautiful sunny, clear, cool spring day, near on perfect.

Faye Bluff is quite spectacular. The closest natural feature that I can compare it to in this southern part of WA is Baxter's Cliffs.

Early next week I will post some photos of the Bluff on another website to which I'll come back here and post the address.

Subject to when and what I have on at the time but if you are going out there and if you don't mind I could tag along. I don't need much of an excuse as I've got a lot more exploring in the region to do.

See ya

And visa versa with the company side of it Dave. Your knowledge of the geological stuff impressed me and you easy going nature was good. One of me mates whos likes to wave a detector would have pricked his ears up and started picking your brain (eh Jim).

Yer sorry about the bum steer turn off, I found it another 10ks or so further south, but now ya know whats down that track.

You would of had a very quick and ecomonical run back to Kal... I was battling strong head winds all the way to Perth, with side gusts every now and then blowing me halfway across the otherside of the road which tended to wake me out of me trance.

Catch up with you again sometime somewhere.

See ya

If I had had a bit more time I would have poked around more on that track. Wildflowers everywhere and an old quarry as well as some interesting formations jutting out of the hills. I didnt go as far as the lake but they are usually worth a look too. Didnt take me long to realize It was heading East instead of South east
