I am after feedback on the 1HZ engine with aftermarket turbo's. I know the factory turbo with direct injection is the better option but can anyone tell me if the 1HZ can hold up to having a turbo fitted? If so what mileage are people getting out of the engines? Does fitting the turbo to this motor cause overheating problems? I am also interested in fuel consumption figures when towing as the fuel consumption section on this site has turbo diesels and naturally aspirated diesels all together in the same section. All feedback would be appreciated - positive and negative.
Cheers, Brett

Brett,
I used to have a DX 80 series which I fitted a Denco turbo kit too when it had done about 60000 km's. Sold it at 145000 k's still running perfectly.
In short it was money well spent, great for towing (pulled like a train), easily held 5th gear on the open road, even running 285's. The Denco kit with full new exhaust kicked in at very low revs and worked really well up to about 3000 rpm, cruised effortlessly at 110. Fuel economy was as good or better.

It was a great rig, If I were you I'd do it.

I know of someone who also had a Denco kit fitted to his 100 series. Has had it for a while now and also says it was the best money he's spent. Tows a 19ft Haines and does it with no fuss at all. Have driven it a few times and it is significantly improved over standard form.

I have had one fitted to my '91 Series 80 1HZ engine. I had about 200 000 km on the clock. It was the best thing I ever did.

You will here all sorts of horror stories about fitting aftermarket turbos but as far as I am concerned most of them are just that - stories.

Most of the problems occur when people either fit the turbos themselves or play around with them once they have been fitted - such as increasing the boost to levels above what the turbos and motors can take.

Get one fitted by a reputable dealer/mechanic, keep it well serviced and you shouldn't have any problems.

There are some very good suppliers out there - contact them and ask them, obviously they will have a product to sell but if they want your business and know their stuff they will help you.

There would be literally 1000s of 1HZ motors out there with after market turbos fitted with only a very small amount with any sorts of problems.

If you have the money then go for it.

I have an aftermarket Turbo fitted to my 94 GXL and love it.

I get about 13L/100 on the highway with just 2 persons and normal luggage, about 14.5L/100 when I tow my Campomatic camper (about 700Kg) and about 16L/100 when I tow my 16'10" Regant caravan.

Have never had an overheating problem, even when we did about 10000K in a month long trip to the Centre about 3 years ago (Sep/Oct)

Agree with some othe comments. Get a good brand (mines a Garrett) and get a good reputable business to fit it. (One who has been around for a long while)

Just do it.
