Diesel Dom
gday,
ive got an 85 Ln65 hilux with tired 2L diesel.
i was wondering if any one knows if the 2.8 3L diesel will bolt straight in?
im no stranger to engine conversions and am quickly learning my way around diesel motors.
any input would be great.
cheers
Dom

Dom,
Southern African countries did not get the '89-'97 shape Hilux bodies but continued with the same body shape you have until the 'newer' shape (not the ugly one that was just released but the one before that) came out in '97. I am guessing this is because tooling costs for the new bodies was too high for the factory in South Africa. Anyway, they continued with the older shape body but these came out of the factory with the 2.8 diesel engine as standard so you should have no probs fitting one in your vehicle.

Hi there Dom, I would go either the 2.4 or 2.8 I believe the 2.4 had less trouble with the oil clagging up than the 2.8. My'n is a 2.8 and 2 of my mates have 2.4s and there is no diff at top speed and where all on each others arse pulling up the hills. You will notice a big difference over the old 2 litre. All good motors but the 2.8 is more vital 4 oil changes. I have tried streching my'n to 4k and the oil I notice starts to thicken up quit considerably so have gone back to every 3k. My mate reckons the 2.4 and 2.8 are the same block just bored out a bit more don't know how true that is but possibilty might be why the oil trouble. Have A look through the trading post and see how many hiluxs/4 runners with a 2.8 d have had heart transplants some with low klms. I used to change my oil/filter every 2.5k but have streched it to 3k.Take Care Steve M

Hi Steve,
i had read about teh oil problem in the 2.8 reading an artical about turbo charging diesels(they did a case study on the 3L).
and after talking with my engine rebuilder today i think i may stay with the 2.4 2L.
from some specs that i have seen the 3L only has about 20Nm of torque over the 2L.
A lot of people have been telling me that is very hard to rebuild diesel motors yourself as the tolerances on things like pistons are very unforgiving...
has anyone rebuilt thier diesel motor themself?
i have done a couple of petrol motors(celica motors for the most part) so i know my way around
tools etc..
cheers

Hi there Dom cant help with the tolerances. Might pay to ring toyota to see who they use to do there diesel rebuilds and ring that place up and get a price. It would pay to ring a few diesel workswhops and get a few different prices.I was told you can still get the motors brand new from toyota. Might pay to compare the difference between a rebuild and a new one. I would imagine toyota would be dear in $$$$ but maybe have some old stock and want to move them. Either way hope you find a good mechanic. I would use a diesel mechanic only as they are the specialist. Take Care hope you get your beast going again Regards Steve M
