G'day all, I have recently bought a new 79 series turbo disel ute. It comes standard with a factory
snorkel, assuming all fittings are tight are these
water tight. I have heard they are rated for dust only. Any information from people with this vehicle would be appreciated.
Thanks and Regards
Jack

Yes it should be
water tight - unless the
water is above your roof line - but by then you would be in serious trouble any way.
The factory fitted snorkles (and other after market equipment such as tow bars etc) are made by the after market manufacturers and re-badged by Toyota (and Nissan etc), sold as a genuine product and cost more.

Did here of someone drowning a TD79 Cannot rember where, but the problem was due to the joins in the
snorkel where it goes throught the guard not being sealed correctly. Apparently the owner had to where the cost of repair.
Personaly I would remove the
snorkel myself and check that its sealed correctly.
Also I am currently in the process of about to order a TD79RV, just wondered what you considered to be a good price for this vehicle on the road drive away.
Regards
Pete.

I also got quoted on new vehicles in Nov 2004. Most dealers would immediately cut $5000 off RRP if paying cash, and no trade. RV was $3600 dearer from memory. Worth it just for the
wheels,flares and bucket seats.
Worth thinking about the factory diff locks too - $2400 extra, but it will take 3 months to get it.

G'day There
I would pull the
snorkel off and seal up all the joins yourself. This was the strong recommendation I got from my mechanic (large reputable 4wd specialist). His view is that while it should be ok from the factory - they have failed so why take the risk.
When I pulled
mine a part - I found the foam they use to seal around the joins in the
snorkel to be of a thin, and permeable open weave foam. I removed all this, cleaned and lightly sanded the area of the join to rough the surface and encourage the sealant to stick. I used a high stress flexible sealant when I put it all back together.
Also, if you are really keen - seal up the dust cup at the bottom of the filter barrel. This is not
water sealed - so if you happened to stop in deep
water and the engine bay fills - apparently
water can enter the filter barrel via the seal around this cup. Again, I sealed it - but make sure you remove and clean it regularly then reseal.
Cheers

I did the same as Troopie above. The 79series comes standard with a "dust"
snorkel from Japan, and has a fording depth of 700mm. Its a 2 piece
snorkel, so you have to seal it up to be sure.
Good vehicle choice Jack. You'll love it.
Cheers
Phil
