I know I should carry a shovel when I go off road, but when I went to the hardware store today, I was overwhelmed with choices & came away with nothing. There were post hole shovels, farmers shovels, general shovels, plumbers shovels, etc. Some had narrow blades, some wide. Some were rounded off, others square. Some had long handles, others short. There was even a 4wd shovel made by Cyclone, but it was shorter than I thought it should be. What's best?

Get riggers gloves for the wife, that way she is protected running the winch cable out too.

I don't give my wife the luxury of using a long-handled shovel. Last time we were stuck on
Stockton Beach - she made use of the little kitchen tidy sweeper we had in the back somewhere to get us out.
See her dig: [ View Image]
I was standing back with a full-length long-handled shovel with a big face area and a
bright yellow fibreglass tube handle - just in case she needed a hand.

What's best depends on what you want to do with it, there's no such thing as a good gp shovel. I carry one for digging dunny holes, short handle wide flat blade and another long handle skinny blade for getting unstuck but never had to use it yet.

Same for me - get mounting brackets for the roofracks, no handle and slides straight in to the brackets. The longer is because it means you can shovel sand from the other side of the truck without going backward and forward.
Mine was about $8 from bunnings, has worked a treat

Long plastic/fibreglassed handle is best, post hole shovel, I found one on
the beach at
Robe and Des Lexic nabbed it, ask him about that.

Agree with the post hole shovel Bonz but have found the plastic handle ones flex too much when digging holes & the fibreglass ones snap at the bottom of the handle far too easy. At work we've tried the lot & found the best brand to get are the timber handle Cyclone post hole shovels. Don't make the mistake & get an irrigation shovel which look almost identical but don't have the reinforcing ribs on the blade or the top turned over so you can stand on them to push them in.
Cheers Craig............

Hi Dave ,
Get a shovel with a long handle and a head that is not angled - so that when you dig out under the car you can push it in . If you get an angled head it can be really difficult .
Cheers ,
Willie .
PS
I got a really sexy one with a yellow fibreglass handle .

anyone your wife can use. LOL.
Personally I have a long handled square head shovel, cos i hate rounded ones. Also a garden spade is handy cos it fits in the back easier. Then I have a small poop shovel for the obvious.

Have a look at this, I have one of these Rugged kits containing shovel head, axe, tyre levers, hammer, breaker bar, saw, two handle extensions and pick. Awesome compact kit. Go to Opposite Lock and search for Rugged.
Cheers Brad

see you are asking about a 4wd shovel and no one has addressed a higher horsepower one. Diesel is best and preferably supercharged. Have a 1984 model at home that would suit, but isn't a woman's tractor. Branded Clarke and big, noisy and yellow. Otherwise a long handled post hole one is good....

I thought you'd take the tractor everywhere you go now
john, especially after
Robe LOL.
And in case Mr Bonz reads this, he can not have my long yellow handled one. Incidently, last trip, I only carried a cheap short handled one and a pretty blue it is too. No one tried to nick it either. Was great for digging those necessary holes out in the
sand dunes but not too good in rocky ground.

No point doing things by halves ;-)
Problem with the SmartBar is nowhere to mount things on it, except for the CB aerial :-(
Had to mount the flag on the back and have it high enough to be seen.....

Thanks all for the
feedback. Sounds like a long handled post hole shovel with
bright yellow handle, straight angled blade & light enough for swmbo.
cheers,
Dave
