The IFS 100 series yota pulls up 7th spot (last) in the lastest 4wd OTY competition, beaten by the rivals. Dont jump to wahoo all you GU owners cause they still only pulled up 3rd spot, beaten by the Jeep and the winner, the new land rover discovery. Seems the 2 top favs are now slowly sliding down the rankings.

O'well I am sure we all love what we have.

Have you guys actually driven a Discovery? When I read it had been voted car of the year in nearly every European counytry I went and had a good look and a drive. It is a very impressive vehicle. I have a 100 Series TD Cruiser as my tour vehicle, it is a registered 8 seater but the 3 rear seats are a joke but for small kids. The Discovery is a registered 7 seater with very comfortable seating for all seven, with a brilliant folding seat arrangement. Would I buy one, not yet but will it make Toyota lift there game for the next model, I bloody hope so. To get back on top Toyota needs a CRI Diesel, a much stronger drive line and well thought out comfortable seating. Land Rover have at least 2 of these features, reliability remains to be seen. In saying that I have been driving Tojos for over 30 years, this one is the nicest to drive but is by far the most expensive to buy, maintain and has the least reliability . My lease runs another 2 years if the Discovery proves to be strong and reliable in that time and Toyota and Nissans new models are not a definite improvement I will definitely be having a good look. I have had a good run with Tojos but I am also realistic and open minded to new vehicles. Cheers Rob

I normally keep my opinion of other vehicles to myself, as I believe 'beauty to be in the eye of the beholder', but in the case of the new Discovery, they have taken a good looking vehicle & made it 'butt ugly'!!
It may well be an efficient off road vehicle, comfortable, practical, but it is still & always will be ugly!

My comapny car lease ran out, so I looked at the Disco 3, as a replacement for the non company Rangie. Loved the Disco 3 but no way in hell could I justify the cost!!!

Got a commodore for the company car, and got he missus a a 2001 Patrol- not quite he same but damn it still is a great 4b.
Certainly best value

Hi Rob,
An extract from our club magazine on a recent wet and greasy trip at Gembrook. After a few vehicles had already chopped up the track a disco 3 decided to have a go on road tyres after some others on muddies had failed.
"The track was far harder now than what we had seen previously. With mud and ruts selected on terrain response we watched with jaws on the ground as the disco 3 came slowly up the hill. Our lack of cofidence in traction control bleep tered as it slowed but regained speed coming over a drainage hump in the track. The traction control was doing a damn fine job of impersonating front and rear lockers as all four wheels turned vigoroursly at the same rate finding enough grip to continue forward. When it made it to the top there was a chorus of "No way"as we stared in disbelief. We couldn't believe an independant suspension 4x4 with road tyres could have this much clearance and traction."
Cheers Mark

they may be a good truck but my brothers 2003 statesman caprice has an even better ride than the disco.

i know thats a bit left field but for all us normal 4wds drivers who go to sum pretty remote and ruff places all i see is toyotas and patrols, even you would have to agree coming from cairns running tours.

p.s. i drive a highly modified patrol 97 4.2 turbo

The problem with Toyota (and pretty much all Japanese companies) is that the top managers in Japan are extremely arrogant when it comes to taking notice of individual customer feedback.

If they think they can make more dollars out of a soft model lineup, then that's what they will sell and make their profits out of. Arrogance or not, however, that is their right.

In many cases that arrogance has led to huge losses (Nissan, Mitsubishi, etc, etc) and a non-Japanese person who listens to the customer has been employed to fix the problem (Nissan a while ago, Mitsubishi also I think, and the latest is Sony)

So all you Toyo fans hoping for a tough vehicle again had better hope their profits turn to sh1t and then wait for a couple of years till they employ the Nissan bloke (he will have fully fixed Nissan by then and be looking for a new challenge) and then wait a couple more years till he can get a true tough truck built again.

For those of you who are considering a Landrover instead and are waiting to see if reliability is better in the newest model - alas, you will be able to buy a Toyo tuff truck again (after the above revamp) before you see that dream.

Only slightly tongue-in-cheek..........

Given the fact that Toyota is the wealthiest car company in the world, I guess they have to be doing something right, for them at least. So I wouldn't expect a few complaints from a forgotten, tiny market down south would make any difference, unfortunaley.
Never the less the next gen. LC V8 crtdi in 07 should be a nice drive...
PS Wish they would put a decent diesel in the Prado.

That's pretty much what I meant by "arrogance or not, that is their right"

Wonder what the torque of the V8 crtdi would do to the front diff!!!??? you'd be lucky to get through a spoon drain at right angles??

I think the newest Prado has got too much of a bloated look - it is very "suburban" in its style a-la Pajero.

The next LC with the V8 crtdi will "only", have 550nm apparently which is supprising given all the 3.0 six cyl diesels with 500nm.
But toyota is conservative its all about reliablity you see.

The new hilux looks good i think, and is breaking all kinds of sales records so I guess Its working.

Drives really nice on road too, haven't yet been offroad in one so I cant comment on that.

Motoring journalists suck big time, so who cares what they pick.

There are heaps of poorly designed cars on the road that journos have enthused about.

The market place picks the winners.

I gently enquired of a motoring journo who reviews cars for a big motoring association why he did not mention the large big spot from the A frame on a locally built car. In reply he said that some imported cars were worse.

Knowing he recently did a review of such an imported car I then asked why he did not mention it in that case, or ever for that matter, after all it is a safety issue and many new cars have bigger and more critical driver blind spots than my first car, a a 1963 XL Falcon.

I was about to add that the '63 Falcon was also more reliable and cheaper to run, but the journalist had already stomped off like a big schoolboy.

Let's face it, the journalists print the spin from the makers, nothing more and nothing less.

typo: 'in my first sentence above the wording 'the large big spot' should be 'the large BLIND spot"

I should have a glass or two before typing otherwise the fingers do not find the right keys..........
