Uneven Tyre Wear???

Hi all,
I am getting really uneven tyre wear on the hilux. I have BFG ATs all round, all are wearing reasonably evenly except for the outside of the front passenger tyre. The outer 5cm is flat (almost bald) whereas the rest of the tyre (and the other 3 tyres) still easily have at least 8mm tread.

Forgot to add...
The
suspension was upgraded last October. OME shocks and springs all round. It has leaf springs all round (no IFS). I was told a wheel alignment was done as part of the
suspension upgrade...

mikeyandmary, sounds very much like too much positive camber or the leaning out at the top of the tyre, if the tyre is weaing bald on the outer edge as you have stated - the wheel would need to be vertical to correct the wear. Excesive toe-in will wear the outer edge but the tread will be feathered across the entire width - but if the tyre is bald and smooth it's a camber issue.
Camber plates can correct this - they bolt in between the spindle and the knuckle housing or if the casteris out too new knuckle bearings and be used which are adjustable to give correct alignment or even caster wedges between the spring pack and the axle housing to roll the housing for correct angles.
However, if you were billed for an alignment when the
suspension was done go back and question it to whoever fitted the
suspension.

Have been trying for years to get decent wear out of tyres on the Pajero. Local Beaurepairs dealer is out of ideas.

Fixed the problem on my pajero. Run half a degree negative camber on the front. Standard setting is up to 1.5 deg positive. Really scrubs out on the roundabouts that way :-). The front drivers side wears on the inside now, just. Passenger side OK.
To do it, put in packers behind the top wishbone mounting bolts on the inside to pul it in. Have a look, you will see what I mean. Sometimes with standard bolts you may not have enough length, so put in high tensile bolts that are longer. Make sure they match in strength and diameter, so you may need to pull one out to check. I can't remember now what they are.
Then you will need a realignment, and remember to tell any one who is doing the alignment in future that you are running non standard camber. Otherwise they may come back saying your front end is stuffed!

Spade, John C has the standard fix for that problem. Is common on early Pajero's, especially if you crank the torsion bars...
Had to do it on both my NC and my NH.

You only get out of tyres what you put into them, meaning regular rotation,front to back,crossways & even rotation on the rim if necessary & correct pressures. Buy yourself a good pressure gauge & even a depth gauge, & regularly check how your tyres are wearing .Save yourself a lot of money in the long run.
If you have had
suspension work done ,check your U bolts tension. Not a lot can be done with solid axles apart from toe in /toe out correction, unless you want to go for caster/camber correction kits or axle bending

I was always led to believe that tyres should only ever be rotated front to rear, & to NEVER change the direction of rotation!

I've got the same sort of vehicle & tyres that MiKe & Mary has got. By doing what I have suggested
mine has worn flat & even at 45Ks.Don't know how to post pictures on this site to prove it , but if you give an email address I'll show you

I don't doubt your tyres have worn evenly, but I have been told that it is dangerous on radial tyres to change the rotational direction.

Wife's Falcon has the same problem after new tyres were fitted and a wheel alignment done.
We should have had the wheel alignment checked after a few thousand Kms. It didn't have any bumps in between so the apprentice (?!!) who did the alignment stuffed up.
Under inflation didn't help (car makers recommended tyre pressures don't suit some tyres).

cant tell bye the pic if yours is a ifs hilux.
if it is then it can be aligned properly.problem with most wheel aligners they align to specs not the car.
if its solid front end then unless you spend a little money on camber caster kit or rotate more frequently you will keep having the same problem.
ps if you do rotate reguarly make sure you just dont rotate front to rear every time.

do you live in a court? I found that I was getting excessive front left wear on my old Rocky and couldn't for the life of me work it out. Ended up rotating about every 5,000 and it eased a bit. Next car was the Falcon, same problem. Went to a different tyre bloke(Widetread in Ferntree Gully) and he asked if I lived in a court. After speaking to a few neighbours, I discovered only those who lived on my side(right hand side as you drive into the court) had uneven wear. We were all driving all the way in and doing a U-turn at the bottom then
parking out the fron of our homes. The constand U-turns were putting excess pressure and subsequently excess wear on the front left corner.

Funny you should mention that... Having 3 kids of my own and being very aware of the other kids in the court, the u-turns are not at all vigorous ones. Just seems that the sweeping 180* turn just puts a lot of load on the front left tyre.

Gidday,One thing you could check is the upper and lower bearings on the hub .I have seen a bearing collapse and throw the alignment way out.
