I have owned a 3.0 litre turbo diesel Patrol since new (2002).
20 days after the warranty expired, (at 89,000kms) the EGR valve failed causing expensive damage to the motor. At this point in time, Nissan Australia are not prepared to extend any goodwill in any way.I paid for the necessary repairs, only to have it fail 2 weeks after getting it back on the road, with similar consequences. The dealer has worn the full cost on this one, but I have since found out that it could be a bit more common. My good nature has been exhausted, & I am prepared to embarrass Nissan Australia in any way I can. The unit has been off the road for 3 MONTHS!!!! Can anyone help me out with ideas?

We also have owned a 3.0l turbo diesel new since 2001. At 72,000 km blown hole in piston 3, turbo reaching pressures of 26psi plus more. Nissan have had it for 4 weeks and I have been dealing up high with Nissan Australia. To cut a long story short they have now offered to pay for all parts re engine rebuild but i have to pay half for labour. No way, also want to bring them down and have a group together and have contacted A Current Affair for help. Join us if you will please. Have a group together with similar and various common problems. It goes further and further the more you look into it. Some cases they are replacing at no cost, others they make you pay. We will fight them.

I'm sure you could get the support of many on this forum that have been in a similar situation.

Just wondering how was the turbo presure was being measured?

The issues raised in post 26325 should be pursued. The one where oil was drawn into the engine and the engine would not shut down. This is now a serious safety issue.

Good luck and keep us posted on progress.

My cousin has one, it's about 18 months old now (done about 65,000k's).

He was going to post sometime today anyway, as he has had no end of troubles with his Patrol. It is in the workshop again today with front hub problems. They keep trying to engage while he is driving. After 3 (I think) sets of hubs, they were taking the transmission out yesterday, and replacing one of the hubs.

I know it's a slightly different problem, but Nissan Australia support have been woeful. He is on first name basis with a few national managers.

I'll get him to email you off forum later thismorning.

Hi Guys,

I will list some of the problems that I have had and if they have been solved yet! The car is a 3.0TD Auto, Jan 04 build, Complied Feb 04, currently at 65K's, on the road for 20 months.
less than 3 weeks old suspension arm came loose whilst off road, loud rattle over bumps---fixed.
Vibration/humm at 130kph, very annoying ---not yet fixed! they have no idea what it is, just don't drive at that speed is their answer!
whine in one of the diffs at 100kph ---not yet fixed! disguised by the BFG AT tyres that I have now on the car, they have no idea what it is, it may be tied into the hubs noise.
Lid of centre console scratches very easy ---fixed, replacement part fitted
Auto hubs engaging and sounding like the old spoky dokies that we all used to put in our push bikes---fixed 29th Sep 05 supposedly, we will wait and see!
Seat belt not retracting ---not yet, next week!
Air-conditioner bearing rattling when cold ---not yet, next week!

There is probably more that I have forgotten about, little bleep y things, this is just off the top of my head. I am going out to Menindee in two weeks for a run and I will see if all problems have been fixed, that will be a good test for it.

Ryde Motor Group support has been good, always open and ready to talk, Nissans Head office support has been dreadful, I have spoken to the Department of Fair Trading" and that say that it sounds like I have a good case for them. I have been told by RMG that they are to treat me with kit gloves by Nissan head office, I know that RMG have a few Patrols that they are having trouble with, they let that slip I think.

Thanks,

P.S I will never buy another Patrol!, but I don't know what else I would buy with similar specs.

With kind regards,

Ben,

Chump_boy, Ben thanks for the replys. You guys are having more problems than I have. Apart from the issue at hand, I have had no problems whatsoever with the car. My issue is more with Nissan Australia's lack of empathy for their customers. Obviously profits take priority over customer satisfaction. This attitude will bite them if the customers take their profits to the competition.

Hi Mark,

I was (and still am) anticipating some insight from Truckster on this topic, he usually is kind enough to share his wisdom on 3.0 GU's. If you do a search of the archives you will se what I mean.

Apparently 3.0l Patrols are solely responsible for global warming.

Cheers,

Darren

I'm a bit worried about the EGR failing causing extensive damage. This I cannot see happening. EGR valve fail in the closed postion and will do nothing. If the get stuck in the close postion, you will lose power and make some smoke. This wont cause massive engine damage. disconnect the silly things as you are out of warranty now dont use them .Just pull the vacuum line off it. or pull the whole lot off and blank the ends up. you get better fuel comsuption as well around town.
I'm a bit concerned that a dealer has said this has caused damage though.
BTW what was the damage to the motor?

Hi,

The EGR valve in the 3.0 is rather more complicated. It is actually a stepper motor controlled device and as such it can get stuck in any position. Also, the ZD30 uses very heavy EGR as can be seen by the big pipe running from the exhaust manifold back to the valve and on to the inlet manifold. The valve is also water cooled. I don't know what damage it would do being stuck in a particular place, but maybe it fell to bits and wound up in the inlet manifold.

Cheers

Ours is Jan 2002 - i believe it is the "improved" model. No problems at all. Bought ex Govt 18 months ago, now almost done 100,000 kms, some of it towing a heavy caravan.

Where are the reports coming from? There have been none posted on this site.

To add a bit of "positive" to this thread...

Mine is a TD42 (4.2TD) 1999 with over 220000kms on the clock and many tough trips over its nexk now.

NOT A SINGLE problem since new... touch wood...

I am scared of changing over... so I am keeping it a while longer.

GUPatrol,

I think you should touch wood, as I think you are one of the lucky one's.
My 00 patrol has 230 000km but it has ran hot since the day I bought it, 5th gear IS a problem in our vintage Patrol. As a result I don't use 5th gear at all. Turbo has been replaced once and fuel pump has been off three times and recalibrated each time, and for some reason it is always different to what they reset it at the time before??.
Anyway keep your beauty and don't take your hand off that piece of wood. (not meant to sound rude)

Happy motoring Trevor.

Trevor,
When a friend of mine with a 2000 Patrol (Series two) had troubles with his 5th gear without even towing a small trailer, I got in touch with Nissan, a lady (whos name escapes me but has been mentioned in this forum) explained the 5th gear problem in detail, she asked me for my VIN number, a day later she came back with a written response to say that mine was OK and was not part of the faulty ones.
She said they know which series and from which VIN to which VIN were affected.
I must say that I have a few friends with GUs and I am not the only "lucky" one, the one with the 5th gear problem got it fixed under warranty and no other problem have showed up at all, and he has 250th on the clock now.

Thanks for the responses guys. Nissan dealer has told me that the EGR valve failed open, blowing gas back into the motor, holding valve in cylinder 1 open, causing it to soot up & bent the valves. Other advice I received from within the organisation said that this may not be the case, & that the Air intake sensor problems on the earlier models is more likely the case as the same thing happened 2 weeks after I got the thing back (with a new ERG valve). The major issue is that Nissan Australia have reviewed the letter & attached copies of Log book & service records & have dismissed any attempt at negotiation. This makes a mockery of their "Customer Service" section. The bad press that this is going to generate far outweighs any cost on their behalf. I am open to any suggestions from anyone as to where I might get some help. The issue isn't going to end here.
