looking to buy a handheld, rechargeable, preferably 12 & 240volt vacuum cleaner/ dustbuster type cleaner. any advice good or bad appreciated.

Not rechargeable but reasonable grunt on a 12V supply + wet/dry. OK for occasional spills and damage control when the kids are running wild in the back of the car...

We've got the Makita one from www.univac.com.au and find it sucks better than other rechargables. Good for getting the sand out of the campertrailer. It has an optional 12v charger (that we got). Run time is 10-15 minutes, then a 3 hour charge, but you can get longer run time by leaving the charger connected while in use (most other brands don't recommend doing that, but Makita say it's ok).
