Has anyone had a problem with their steering stabiliser on an 80 series?
I am getting a brief rubbing/grinding noise at the front, but only when turning right (not left) steadily (not sharply) and often as I accelerate out of a corner.
Have had a mate look at it and he reckons the steering stabiliser is probably the culprit. It extends when you are going right and reduces when turning left.
It is the original stabiliser and the car has done 200k.
Another mate, who is a very mechanically experienced, thought it might be the power steering, but went for a drive with me and said it was not that.
Replacing the stabiliser in the next couple of days, just interested if anyone else has had anything similar.
Cheers,
Scotty

Sounds like your steering rod may be bent. I had the same thing happen while doing a go around on a burnt out track and smashed through a dead tree - nothing special but a stick went perfectly between the front bashplate and
the gap left for the tyre when turning and smacked into the steering rod where the stabaliser ataches. Result every time I turned it ground on the chasis giving a notchy feel and scraping noise. It was an easy fix I just undid the adjusting clamps each side and turned the steering rod so the bow pointed down then placed a jack under the bow and jacked up until it was straight, moved steering rod back to original position and tightened clamps and all was good

checked your CV's? Could it be the CV's have worn a groove in the race for going in a straight line, and when you turn the balls are being pushed in and out of this groove making the grinding noise?
I have noticed with the new thicker (4-Way) stabiliser, the spring over the outside rubs on a steering arm fairly often, but it doesnt give any grinding or feedback thru the wheel.
If replacing the stabiliser, stop past Kmart and grab one of their cast $3 tie-rod forks. Its just a 2-pronged
fork that acts like a wedge- you belt it in with a hammer and it slowly drifts off your stabiliser bush- I tried to encourage
mine off with every word I could think of, but only the Kmart
fork actually helped.
