Some oil coolers run through the radiator and are mean't to be cooled by the hot water. This has the effect of heating the oil even more, not less. bigger air filled oil coolers on the front of the radiator are probably the go. Or buy a manual.
Don't drive it too much in overdrive, pull it back at any slight incline.

Wally,

If you do not regularly have this happen or you don't intend on climbing big hills regularly I would not worry about it. My 96 3.5 lt did this once in it's 170 000km life with me but that was also on an extremely big climb with van in tow. No side effect were the result of this occurence.
If you ntend on doing similar work like the Barrington Tops regularly then maybe look into a transmission cooler.

Regards Trevor.

Heat is the number2 enemy of the auto transmission, so fitting a oil cooler up front will not do it any harm, if anything it will be good for it

Hi there Wally,we've just got over the exact same problem,we have an NF V6 wagon and the light was coming on enough to annoy the ya know what out of ya.Took the Paj to local auto trans experts in town and not only fitted a bigger cooler, but ran it in series through the old one also, there was enough room to fit another and all is well now.We tow a 1200kg van but will have a lighter 4x4 camper trailer later,to get to the out of the way spots.Just for the record coller and fitting all up was $300 I thought that was quite good.Cheers and good luck

Extra oil cooler will cost you round $200-400 TOPS, cheap insurance.

Hi Wally,
What I do is lock the torque converter when towing up long hills. The trans runs at 70C, cooler than the engine. Manual lockup systems certainly arn't for everyone, but they do help your transmission to run cooler.

Wally, Just be sure that the Synthetic transmission Fluid meet’s the Pajero’s specification’s I.E if it takes Dextron 3 Make sure the Synthetic fluid is a Dextron3 fluid.

I’m sure you know this, but I would hate for you to damage the transmission, as we know autos can be sensitive bits of machinery and the incorrect fluid can cause problems.
