oil change

I wold like to do my own service on my Landrover Freelander 2002 Mod. Diesel and require some advice as to how to get the sump guard off and the location of the oil filter. Anyone to help?

I don’t have one, but just look around the sump guard for some screws or bolts that go into it and bingo take them out and it should just fall out or clip off.

As for the location of the oil filter don’t know but a hint, just think of the most inconvenient and had to get place on the side or the bottom of the engine and look there!! . If that fails grab a torch and look for something white, blue or possibly black that is cylindrical that is on the engine block somewhere.

Buy yourself a oil filter removing tool, it will save you a lot of time, especially if the SOB’s at the dealership have put the thing on to tight.

The oil filter is at the top of the engine under the top engine cover near the dipstick - the filter does not look a filter - it is large black plastic thiny with what looks like a large bolt molded into the top of it. It has an old style cartridge. - so remove the top cover first.

As far as the under tray is concerned is is riveted to a large aluminum frame and the whole lot has to be removed as a unit. The frame is bolted to the car at the front under the bumper (4x13mm bolts I think) it is also bolted at the rear near the front wishbones with 2x13mm bolts on either side and there may be another 2 small bolts on the front suspension X member.

The drain plug is obviously at the bottom of the sump.

As it is a pain to remove the undertray I have removed the rivets and replaced them with small captured bolts and lock nuts so I don't have to remove the aluminum frame as well.

First look in your handbook for the type of oil and how many litres it takes you can also check the back of the book where it has service records and it will also show you what to replace/check, then head down to you local Auto parts supplier and purchase the oil and oil filter, etc, if you don't have the details of the filter there is always a book their that will tell you which one suits your model. Then head home start the job. Now you have the filter you will know what it looks like. I find when I do my oil change I run my car for 5min before I start the service, not to long as you don't want the oil hot, just enough to make it drain well.
As above get yourself a oil filter tool.
You shouldn't have too remove the sump guard there will be a cutout in it that will allow you to get to the sump plug, but I don't have Landrover.

Haza/Hammelburg - a hole saw could make a hole big enough to get at the sump plug. I have the earlier L series diesel where the oil filter is under the engine so it was easier for me to modify the mounting of the undertray. If I only had to worry about the sump plug as the TD4 has I would have done things differently like cutting out a hole and making a plastic guard/tool to stop the oil splashing everywhere when the sump plug is removed.
