A lot of tour operators on the Cape York circuit use the Coi liesure lightning tent. It fits in a flat pack .
It's easy to erect, just bang a steel peg in each of the 4 corners. then slip in the adjustable centre pole and its upright. It's easy to disassemble , fold up & insert it in its flat pack.
I see on the Web that this tent sleeps 4 , weighs 15.5kg and cost is $600 or so.
Any members use one of these tents?

Hi, I'm not a mmeber but a regular 'visitor' I have on ebut it's not Coi it's Oz Design.. and wasn't $600. the Austrlaian made ones are unfortunatlye , I think mine was closer to $200. It is exactly the same, but is slightly rectangel with a small extewnsion.. same principle, but it allows a queen mattress inone end, otherwise you have to sleep withthe pole in the middle of the mattress or have a couple of single mattreses..
They are awesome, the only thing is thta when camping on coastal areas I ad a couple of guy ropes to stop it from flapping around.. takes 5 mins to set up.. They pack up nice and flat, although if you weren't stroing it n the roof it's size when packed may be a problem as the square frame in the roof doesn't dissasemble....

I have a COI Tornado Extended tent - which is the next size up from the Lightning.

They are definitely not exactly the same as the Oz Design (or do you mean Oz Trail???) tents. They are a good quality heavy weight canvas - and that is why they are more expensive.

If you want a decent touring tent that will last a lifetime then get decent canvas. Any touring tent that sells for around $200 will have lightweight poly-cotton 'canvas'.

BTW, we love our COI tent - it has never leaked and is a breeze to set and pack up.

the coi tents were great quality and made in new zealand, since taken over by primus, no longer made, only some old stock left in a couple of sizes. replaced by chinese made 'lightweigt canvas' red desert tents. There are heaps of these chinese made jobs getting sold now under all sorts of names, but they all have substandard poles etc. OK if only used once or twice a year, but if you want a good touring tent then go for a quality aussie made item like a southern cross etc. Most common sizes are the 8"6 x 8"6 or the 10"x10". you can get either the centre pole or a side pole kit.

cheers Brad

As Bradely said the original COI tents made in N.Zealand are very good tents made out of 10 oz. canvas,so if you can get hold of one you won't gowrong.I have the Lightning Extended model which I have had for years and used in all weather conditions with no problems. It would be a shame if these tents are no longer available so beware of the cheaper copies.

Primus are still making tents and are now offering a budget camper trailer tent as well. All their tents seem to be 10 oz canvas .
