As part of a response on a different topic ("Dual battery in 100-series" - post no. 26996), DodgeDiesel suggested that the Wild Country 42-litre fridge was a good alternative to Engel and Waeco at about 50% of the price (Response ID 387280). A question was then asked of DogdeDiesel as to why he thought the Wild Country fridge was a good buy, if you were to put aside the fact that it is about half the price of the others. It was also asked of DodgeDiesel what type of compressor the Wild Country fridge contained.

There has so far been no response in the original post to these very interesting questions. Therefore, I ask again, does anyone have any knowledge or experience of the Wild Country fridge. Who makes it, what is the quality of the insulation, what type of compressor does it use?

Are you out there, DodgeDiesel?

I don't know much about the quality of these fridges, but it is pretty hard to put aside the fact that they are 50% of the price of the others.

I would guess that the majority of campers only go once or twice a year (Does anyone have a statistic on this?). How could they justify the cost of a fridge for $1500, when they could get a different product for half the price? Even if they have slightly thinner insulation, or a different compressor?

These companies cater for the majority of campers. The minority that camp more often, and need good, long-lasting gear, will pay the extra. It's the same with 4WD's, and tents, and stoves, and **insert high priced camping/4WD/fishing item here** etc....

What seems to be happening now, for better or worse, is that the Chinese manufactured items are becoming quite good. I think (and please remember I am an importer of 4WD equipment) a lot of the items are now equivalent to what is being made here in Australia. Importers like myself go back to the factory with each order, telling them what we want improved in the next batch. I know with winches, motors have gotten more powerful, gears are quieter, Castrol grease is being used instead of the junk they used before. Australian rated D-shackles are now being made in China. And the amazing thing is, they not only listen, but they modify their processes to include the changes, normally by the time the next batch comes out!

We are going to start importing fridges soon, and I know the ones we will get will have danfos compressors, strong lids, and nice thick insulation. As we move on, there will be requests and comments from customers, which we will pass on to the factory.

Having said all that, I am an importer with a vested interest, so disregard what I say, and I will not be offended one little bit.

Cheers,

Chump

Good on you chump_boy. The quality will get better eventually (just like the Japs etc). It takes time.

Re the price/quality comparisons, not everyone needs the longevity of some of the more well known and established brands. If you are only a once or twice a year camper, check out hiring a quality unit (if you can find one) or grab a cheapie that suits your needs.

Hi Dusty M,
The wild country fridge is marketed by Ratys Outdoors as wild country is his own brand. The fridge is from China,is a good size at 42l,has a digital readout and a 1 year warranty. On the downside, no internal basket , unproven reliability over Australian roads and corrugations and 12volt only.If proven to be reliable would be a good buy at $599.
cheers Mark

Refrigeration Research, have taken over the production of the Liemack range of portable fridges. The company use the same components as Liemack so it was a natural progression for the company to carry on making these hardy and versatile 12v/240v fridges. Refrigeration Research have rebadged the fridge and it’s now part of our range of Reefer refrigeration products. Since announcing the continuation of these portable fridges, the company has been inundated with calls from Liemack owners expressing there delight that the fridges are still being made although under a different name. We have also received an overwhelming number of orders for the Reefer units through our factory outlet, from people that are familiar with the quality of these fridges and their ability to do well in the most extreme of conditions.

gramps,
you won't get that question answered by him...L0L

he obviously has no facts that he can actually prove, either for or against.
Sounds like he's a bitter and twisted individual, when they won't offer the information asked of them they are generally hiding something even if it's only lack of knowledge and understanding of the technical merits of the Reefer range of fridges!!!!!

Sarg, I went to the link and found this->

Heat Load:
the biggest heat load on a FRIDGE is the heat infiltration through the insulation. In fact anything that is inside the FRIDGE making heat eg. warm beer, will make the fridge work very hard to cool it down. The more efficient the design of the refrigeration "system" the less power used to remove the heat put in by leakage & warm contents.

Charge:
The ideal way to charge a portable 12/24v fridge is to run a dual battery system in your vehicle, one of which being a DEEP CYCLE battery. The deep cycle battery should be automatically isolated when the ignition switch is off. We advise that you should have the fridge directly connected to the battery with a fuse on the pos (+) line near the battery. Avoid running the fridge power line with any CB, UHF, HF radio or GPS co-axial cables. All fridges generate some electrical interference.

Efficiency/Current Draw:
to test a fridge for efficiency you want to know the battery voltage and the current draw with the fridge set to maximum. Fridges are at their most efficient when they are at temperature (ie. the temperature dictated by the thermostat control) because the compressor is not running. The effects of external climatic temperature and the effectiveness of the units insulation will determine how long until the compressor will need to start up again to keep the fridge in the required temperature zone - which for foodstuffs should be BELOW 4°. Note - it is very unhealthy to let frozen foods defrost and then refreeze. It is also unhealthy to store refrigerated food go above 5°C. To obtain the optimum operation from your fridge, ensure that it is wired using at least 10 Amp cable. WE RECOMMEND the use of at least 20 Amp. SOLDER any crimp connection to avoid voltage drop. Always remember voltage drop is your worst enemy in vehicle wiring.

Sarg, what's wrong with the information posted by EO at the link you have shown?
or Have I missed something....?

What was it that you found - that I didn't ??

>> Liemack owners expressing there delight that the fridges are still being made although under a different name.

That's amazing as these fridges were a disaster. Most Liemack owners ended up being very unhappy vegemites.

I had a Liemack and no problems, I think you will find it depends on the battery system, as is the case with all fridge's, but the Liemack had a large current draw at start-up, which lasted for less than a second, due to the inverter and small battery systems suffered.

I'm getting the new 70 Litre Reefer fridge/freezer which is a similar looking fridge but with totally different electronics package, as I found 50 Lt was a tad small for long term beach camping.

This new fridge uses the 240v Mitsubishi rotary compressor and can be used to recharge the Aux battery system when in caravan parks.

The compressors didn't last for some reason Mainey...lots blown up.
+ or - 10 or so amp hrs doesn't bother me, reliability is of prime concern to my way of thinking. Good luck with the new fridge.

$499 at SuperCheap on special
New low voltage Mitsubishi compressor
Quality of insulation is on a par with Engel and Waeco. Could be marginally better looking at it for thickness. Polyethylene casing is good insulation.
Would I buy one, sure I would from the reports I have heard on them.
Engel is way WAY over priced and no better than a Waeco or any other brand of portable fridge. You can never afford to get an Engel repaired and they go bang as often as anything else.

....So you are a refrigeration specialist now.....

(A) What fridge is best...?

(B) What fridge do you use....?

(C) Why is it better than the rest....?

and I bet you won't answer those three questions

I will answer if you do not mind as the question was not addressed to me
no one fridge is best
you have to look at insulation / durability / performance / power consumption / value for money / availability of spares / spares prices

I use an EvaKool and a home made freezer Danfoss powered
EvaKool good insulation / durable / good performance for power consumption / value for money / no problem with parts / top is smooth and flat ideal for use as food preparation area / can be easily cleaned and maintained / good hygiene

What is better than the rest no one fridge is better than the rest look for above criteria

Wild Country fridge has good tough construction / inbuilt thermometer / good performance for power consumption / value for money /new high efficiency low voltage Mitsubishi compressor
Any wire maker will make a plastic covered basket for a reasonable price for the Wild Country fridge Rays and Super Cheap is same fridge SuperCheap $100 cheaper
Would I buy a Wild Country fridge bet-ya I would
We have had 1 Wild Country fridge in for warranty repair pretty knocked about from back of Ute was faulty crimp terminal

I always have a smile when I see these "debates" on mobile fridge units. I wonder how many of these newies on the market (eg Waeco etc) are still bouncing around in the backs of vehicles in 20 years time???
Maybe the Engel is a bit more expensive- but.........
As for the Engels going bang as often as anything else- with nearly 20 years service- they would have to outnumber ANY other brands..
But then again, Different strokes for different folks.
