Can anyone tell me where I can get low heat (LPG gas torch) aluminium welding rods. I have seen them demonstrated at some of the 4WD & caravan shows.
Preferably in the Perth area
Thank you
Cheers

Hi George

I bought some a few years ago from an Expo show. Will try to find the notes that came with it and let you know. Not sure just where it is but will look.

I think our local Mitre 10 store has them in their welding accessories section. Rus.

Hi George (WA),
If memory serves me correct you can get the brazing torch as a kit from bunnings,Mitre 10 or any BOC outlet in NSW,In WA at a guess I would say any of the bigger hardwares would have them,I think you need a step up or a step down conector for the torch to fit the bottle,I have also seen these rods demomstrated at 4WD and camping shows and I don't think their Aluminium it was way to easy for him to do...I know people are going to say practice makes it look easy, but I seen him braze a hole in a beer can...and it just hit me the filler rod was an alloy..my thoughts only, anyway I think the torch was priced around $ 60- 70 dollars....yes I have brazed wrought aluminium with pure Al rods and it was difficult it only takes a hundreth of a second and your job is a blob. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Jeffrey, I have tried BOC but no luck here in WA.
I will give Bunnings a go.
I agree, it will take a bit of practice.

Hey Nudenut
Me thinks you should drink more beer and get some practice on the empty cans at least its a good excuse! it aint as easy as looks.
The trick is to have the job and the rod both at the right temp then and only then it works my efforts have been mistaken for pelican poo more than once

This is soldering rather than welding, you should be able to find alusol fairly easily.

Have used those rods with good success. Yes, it is a form of soldering. The trick is though, you have to scratch the oxide off the alloy surface and to do this you need a stainless steel wire brush. Ordinary steel fails miserably!
I also bought them at a 4WD show several yrs. ago.
cheers the kesh

I bought some Ultra Bond aluminium repair rods at the boat show, but I haven't tried them yet.

The company is Lavere Products, PO Box 50, Taralga, NSW 2580.
Phone (02) 4840 2017

If you gave them a call they'd likely be able to tell you of a retailer near you.
