Derek
I've just been down to Nissan to do the ground work for buying a new Patrol and in looking over the car discovered it had 17" tyres. I was going to get BFGs fitted straight off as part of the deal and went to the tyre dealer to get a price comparison. He claims the only 17" tyres available in Australia, regardless of brand, have road patterns - eg: there are no 17" off-road tyres available.
I'm not going to buy an off-road vehicle if I can't get off-road tyres.
Has anyone heard this and can anyone confidently confirm or deny this situation?
Thanks, Derek

I'm fairly sure you can get BFGs. Just checked the site and they are listed i the 70 series profile. That said I'd use 16" tyres on sunraysia wheels and keep the alloys for when you sell the car.

G'day
You can get 17" BFG AT's in LT (and other brands) BUT. They are much dearer than the 16 inch version and still difficult to get outside a metro area.
You can also fit 16 inch wheels and tyres to your 05 Nissan. Have a read of the manual and you will see that the DX comes with 16 inch wheels and tyres plus there is a wide range of tyres and wheels fitted to the model/s.
There is also a tyre placard available for the 16 inch wheels and tyres as a Nissan part. I would be very surprised if your salesman new anything about this.
Do a price comparison on 16 and 17 inch tyres. 17 inch tyres are still attracting a premium$$$.
When purchasing with added in accessories watch the RICH TAX once the vehicle starts to get over $50,000.00 The sales person will not discuss it with you unless you bring it up.
Regards
Paul

'I'm not going to buy an off-road vehicle if I can't get off-road tyres. '
17" wheels is no reason to not buy the patrol. Buy a 2nd set of 16" wheels and tyres. As others have said when you stray off the black top you'll have no prob picking up a spare if need be. In time 17" tyres will become more popular. Bit like when 16" came in and 15 was the go.

Belive ProComps do a 17" Mud tyre,as always more coin than the 16"s and you may get a funny look asking for them.
Best bet would be the "downgrade" to the 16s as they are cheaper, more readily available and better offroad - especially if you are airing down.

Can I suggest you buy another set of rims (16") and a set of tyres to meet your newfound needs....say 6+ months after purchase or in the next financial year. Buy them as part of your "maintenance" and don't capitalise them as the Luxury Car Tax may come into play. 16" tyres are relatively easy to buy in out of the way
places but 17" not so popular nor plentifull. Cheers and good luck with your intended purchase.

Price will be biggest problem, as for off road tyres, have seen a new gu in a magazine with 17 inch BFG muddies and have seen a new prado with 17inch Cooper muddies. So, they are starting to come out, as said above thoough, just not popular yet.
cheers

Hi Derek,
I have a Prado 120 GXL which has 17 inch and I replaced the factory Dunlops with BFG LT 265/70 R17 AT's. I am happy with them but they are hard to get at this stage once you are out back. At
Lawn Hill in August and a guy had to wait 3 days to get a 17 inch tyre. I bought six tyres so I have that extra spare just in case.
Many of the new cars are now going 17 inch (New Cruiser has 17's) so they will be easier to get in the future.
Mine cost $280 each.
Not sure what size tyre the new Patrol has but the BFG web site does list a few in 17 inch.
Cheers, Bob

Hey Derek, my opinion the 17" rims look hot on the new patrol, when I bought
mine 2005 4.2 T/D I was a bit disappointed on them being 17" but they looked to good to change.
You will definitely need higher rubber on them to compensate for higher rim.
And I can vouch for there being off road rubber available, I'm running 285/70/17 BFG Mud terrains on
mine and when I was researching I found out the same size is also available in the Cooper STT Muddies.
A bit pricey but hey this is what we do. You should be paying around $370 p/tyre.
They are slightly under a 33" equivalent, you will need at least a 2" lift to fit them, I have OME springs & shocks 2"

Thanks BABS
I've had to do a lot of soul searching to jump
camp from Toyota to Nissan. In the end it had to be Nissan. Better price, non-arrogant salesmen, better off-road, live front end and more power than my old 1HZ. One thing I didn't like though was the paint finish on
the arch flares - and every car was the same. It looked like they had a film of oil on them. The paint on the metal panels was perfect.
Have you noticed this?

Derek the only time my truck gets washed is when it rains.
Have not had a problem with the flares kind of like the finish on them, but then again colour might have something to do with it, my truck is silver. What colour truck did you get?
I am assuming the darker the colours possibly would have this problem you describe after washing?
One thing I have noticed is the scratches on the guards don't show as much as on the metal.
Cheers,
Babs.

With the 2 latest model GUs I've wheeled with, the rims dont look bleep hot for too long, they scratch to buggery real easy.. we only did some easy work out at
Swifts Creek, and at about $800ea, i wouldnt wanna have to replace them.
throw some cheapys on there to save them for resale.

I would never go near that tire place again if thats his knowledge in tires.

Got new 3.0l Patrol for work a couple of weeks ago. I asked the salesman at the time if I could down grade to 16inch sunrasia rims. He originally said I would have to buy the extra set and keep the alloys for when I traded it. In the end he conceded that it could be bought without the alloys and would cost $600 - $700 per wheel less to buy. He suggested it would look a bit silly.
In the end the fleet company who finance the vehicle wouldn't have a bar of downgraded wheels so I never really got the chance to test the dealer out.
Worth asking the dealer the question if you think 16 inch are the go.
