I don't want to start an argument about which tyre, but would like some advice about what size to put on GU 3.0TD. The current 265/70/16s are getting a bit ordinary and will need replacing pretty soon. Current driving conditions about 50% low speed sealed roads - 50% gravel roads.
Will be doing some desert travel on the newes also.
Have been tossing up between 265/75 or 285/75.
Would the 285s be a bit overgeared for the 3.0 litre, with a camper trailer, 2 up?
The speedo is about 4% under at the moment
Thanks
Mike

Thanks, I did read that, but nobody offered any advice regarding overall gearing. I know the speedo gearing effect would be about 2% over, I was more interested in the resultant overgearing and pulling ability!

I and few mates all have 3.0l with 285's including one auto and haven't found the change to gearing a problem. I tow an ally runabout without no probs appart form the really large hills past Coryong where you'd be changing back through the gears in anything! Also towing a full furniture trailer on the Hume hwy and could comfortable sit on 100/110 and still pull out and overtake if need be.

I'm toying with the same issue. I fitted 275/70s from new but I think I'll go for 265/75s this time.
A good link to check size and speedo impact is: tyre size

G'day all. I just fitted 265/75r16 10 ply Cooper S/T's to
mine. The reason? 265/75 10 ply's were only $6 per tyre dearer than 265/70's. All the other sizes were up to $50 a tyre dearer. 265/75's are a "standard size" thus the cheaper price, and I suspect easier to find in the bush if you need one in a hurry.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Hi Patrol 2
I just finished going through the same dilemma about 2 weeks ago.
After getting advice from posting on this
forum, I decided on 265/75/R16 BFG AT
I deided on this because of the following reasons
- About $55 per tyre cheaper than 275/70/R16
- About $90 per tyre cheaper than 285/75/R16
- Should hopefully make speedo correct
I have to say I am glad I made this decision. We have 2 inch lift on our car, and this tyre size suits the car
well.
The car looks better, and drives
well also.
You can look at my profile for photo of the patrol
Hope this helps

I have 285/75's on my 3.0TD GU and find no problem with the gearing. I regularly tow a 1.6T van and it handles that very easily. I fitted the tyres to the vehicle the day I bought it so have no experience of the OEM 265/70 tyres. But I do have a Dtronic fitted so that probably clouds the picture of gearing (7% higher gearing but ~20% more pwer). Also, my GPS nows shows only a 1% speedo error (now reads low).
I have found a HUGE difference off-road with the 285/75 (33") tyre performance and that was my reason for changing the size. While I have no back to back comparison for the GU, on my 80 series I went from 31" tyres (~265/70) to 33" (~285/75) and beach work that was previously 20psi 4WD with 31" tyres was now able to be driven at road pressures with the 33" tyres. Once the 33" were done to say 15 psi, the 1HZ diesel was virtually unstoppable in sand, unlike its previously indifferent performance with 31" tyres. Its difference was enough to convince me to put the 285/75's on my GU from day one when I bought it new (cost $600 changeover for 5 Cooper ST tyres).
Cheers

I put 285/75s on my 80 series 1HZ and noticed straight away that the car didn't accelerate as
well (not that it ever did in the first place) and I couldn't lock the brakes up anymore. I've gone back to the 265s and noticed a big change for the better. Here in
Brisbane there's a bit of a buzz going round as the Transport Dept is getting strict on tyre suppliers fitting oversize tyres. Apparently if you're in an accident and you have oversize tyres you can be wiped by your insurance company and if there's personal injury,
well you're in deep doggy doo! Your Patrol is far more powerful than my Cruiser but why change what millions of yen and years of engineering experience has developed (ah God, I must be gettin' old). Anyway that's my two bobs worth. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Most Patrols in our club run on 285/75/16. The main reason is the you get better
clearance off road. Have a look at Pro-comp Xterrains tyres in 285/76/R16,
the are "comparable" in quality to MTR's and BFG Mud Terrains
they are on special at the moment - buy 4, get 1 free

Mike,
I run 285/75/R16s on my 3 lit GU towing either an 18ft glass boat or a c/trailer and have found no problems.

Thank you to all who took the trouble to answer my question and it has been of great help.
That doesn't mean I know what I will do, but it has been a help.
Probably will go with Cooper ST 265/75 as should be able to get replacement almost anywhere and the open tread pattern should cope with dirt road travel
Thank you all once again
Mike

Mike,
We live in QLD. Have just purchased 265/70 CooperSTs for our 2003 3.0l td manual. The tyre dealer was adamant about the insurance ramifications of fitting 75s because they were not shown on the placard.
More than happy with the
Coopers after 6000 ks.

Hi, also looking at fitting 285/75 to my 99 GU. My concern is if they will fit the standart spare tyre holder. Seams to be very little clearance between the 265's and the rear wiper/bumper. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
