G'Day All,
Just drowning my sorrows.
Back from the mechanics, looking for source of an oil leak.
Turns out the end of the camshaft which fits into the seal has a large crack just above the locating pin at the fornt of the engine. Looks as if the pin is used to drive the camshaft off the belt, the centre bolt just holds it in place.
Have been quoted $900 for camshaft, plus worn drive roller, plus seals, plus labour. (probably $2500 all up)
Haven't read of this problem before in this engine.
Anyone able to shed some light, or advice even, on the best method of repair or who has the best prices on spares.
Rang about 10 diesel suppliers, imported engine guys, etc, only 1 was interested in looking for parts for this engine, Gympie 4WD Spares.
Any help appreciated
A very broke
Rolande

If you don't do any good, try Ivan Tighe (pronounced Ty) Engineering at West End,
Brisbane. Years ago, on a few occasions they managed to reclaim engine components for us that I thought were definitely U/S.

G'Day Derek,
Last option. One of my first thoughts was welding, but want to keep the vehicle so may take the pain and go with new parts

Derek, if it was
mine I would be going for the 'reclaim' as recomended by Rolande.... if there is no other major damage.
I have had similar work done in
Melbourne to a crankshaft in a Toyota and it worked a treat and cost next to nothing compared to a rebuild.
The only question you need to ask is have they done this type of work previously and if affirmative, let them fix it for you.
I realise is like asking a brain surgeon if he is any good, but you have to know the guys doing the job are capable of getting the required result.

Sad news Rolande,
No doubt you have, but I'll still say it, have you tried 4x4 parts Aust at Brendale or Strathpine?. I have always had success finding parts from these guys but that was for older cars.
Hope it helps, if not more bourbon might ;-))
Trevor.

G'Day Trevor,
Thanks for the thoughts, bourbon looking good right now, no luck with 4X4 parts, none for turbo model.
Apparently three different heads and camshafts for this engine

I had a crankshaft journal repaired by Paul England Engineering in Pascoe Vale (from memory) many years ago. The work was good but the only prob was he took a very long time to do the job - approx 8 weeks.
