just tryin to work out which would be the be a better route to go. We are crossing the Simpson from Birdsville, when we get to Dalhousie Springs we can either go to Oodnadatta or Mt Dare. Can anyone tell me what the road condition is like to Mt Dare as apposed to Oodnadatta (fuel wise).

Mt Dare is closer to Dalhousie than Oodnadatta & the roads to both are very similar (rocky & sandy patches) although they do improve to a 4 lane dirt freeway in places around Oodnadatta. The direction to take is normally dependant on where you intend to head next & what you want to see. After crossing the desert all the roads will seem pretty smooth in comparison ;-) What direction do you plan after Dalhousie? N, W, S.

We are heading to uluru after the simpon and our map shows a 24 hr servo at Mt Dare. We will be cutting it fine on petrol after the crossing but if both tracks are roughly the same in terain, it makes more sense to push on to Mt Dare, thanks for the imput.

yes like craig said it depends where you are heading , both ways are easy just dont go like a bull at a gate , cos you will be fixing a flat or two , there is only a few litres diff between the two places from dalhousie.
p.s. enjoy the swim its been great every time ive crossed the simpson

Hi ingo57,
All the tracks around Dalhousie have been graded in recent weeks, well the surface has been scraped, so all roads OK. Dalhouse to Mt Dare 70k through gibber country then low lying creek country until Mt Dare and pub.
Dalhousie via Old Dalhousie ruins and the Pedirka track is rough stoney track even after grading on the way to Hamilton Station and Oodnadatta. Gravel Road from Hamilton to Ooodna (pub) gets corrugations as it generally travels faster. Alternative is via Bloods Creek and Eringa Waterhole to Hamilton, better track but longer.
Need fuel go to Mt Dare first, otherwise head North or South depending on final destination.
Regardless enjoy the desert and surrounding country.
Regards
Ian at Mt Dare

How much fuel are you going to carry ? Most like to drive to mount dare because its a its a little closer than dailhousie , and then drive to Oodnadatta.

Some nice people in Oodnadatta , just look out for the Pr*k that drives the pink Volvo lol

looking at carying 170 litres all up, from Mt dare I plan on heading to uluru for a few days, then start heading home back through the Oodnadatta track.

Ingo,
Mt Dare is much closer about 70kms and the people there are worth having a chat to. The road has been graded but there are some sections of gibber near Blood creek were you have to take it easy. However this is no rougher than from Purnie to Dalhousie. I cant comment on the road from Dalhousie to Hamilton Station, although from HS to Oodnadatta the road is pretty good.
A great bush camp is ar Eringa waterhole which is 1/2 way between Mt Dare and Hamilton Station. If you go to Mt Dare then make sure you detour to the Dalhousie ruins, they are worth a look.
Cheers
Craig
