Have a 1993 Hilux SR5 2.8l non-turbo with 235ks on the clock.
Noise is like gear whine. It occurs while driving and is gone if clutch is pressed. It is not there when idling in neutral with clutch out. Had heavy duty clutch 35k ago but suspect it is in gearbox, driveshaft, diff etc.
Does anyone have suggestions of where it might be and how to isolate it as the noise is not present when stopped? Has anyone know of problems at these ks, age etc?
Hope your experience will help me find the problem more easily
Thanks
Alan

Hi there Alan, I have the exact same vehicle my'n has 275 on the clock have the slightest wine in 3rd gear can only just hear it if you are listening for it cant hear it over the radio or if the air con is on. You dont say if it is there through all the geras or just a certain gear. Possibly coming from the diff. I have known a few hilux's to get very noisy diffs especiaaly when the klms start to get high. My has no diff noise but am pulling the diff centre out in a couple of weeks as it has sprung a slight leak only a drop a week but am getting the limo tightened up and new wheel bearings and new diff bearings as
well.Costing $500 including parts thats with me pulling apart and sending the diff away + axles.I would say that it's possibly the diff if its there in all gears if only when in a certain gear than I would say the gearbox. I have never heard of uni joints causing a whine, if they are a bit how you going they would be clunking or possible vibrations.Let us know how you go. Regards Steve M

Stephen
Noise is there in all gears and sounds to come from rear. Probably diff or could it be the bearing in the middle of the drive shaft?

Hi Alan mate I would say it's coming from the diff. Normally if the centre bearing was shot you would have a bad vibration on take off. Take Care Steve M
