we're looking to buy a 2nd hand 4x4 (off loading a Bravo) and interested in hearing views on Patrol or Landcruiser. Would be going for diesel around 4l and 2000 or later. We don't do heaps of 4x4 but a bit and also tow a van.

Both are very good vehicles - if you are going diesel and can afford it go turbo diesel.

Use the 'Search' button on the top and type in 'Landcruiser' or 'Patrol' and this will bring up all related threads on this topic. You will see that this question is often asked - very similar to the Holden / Ford arguement (though we know Ford is better LOL).

Basicaly if you want something that nice to drive get a Landcruiser and
if you want strong driveline then get a Patrol...

In current 4wd monthly 4wd of the year comparo:

Driveline Engineering - Patrol 9/10, Landcruiser 6.5/10
Serviceability -P 9/10, L 8/10
Aftermarket Accessories P 9/10, L 8.5/10
Fit and Finish - P 7/10, L 8/10
Steering and Suspension P 5/10, L 6.5/10
Fast and Loose -P 5/10, L 6.5/10
Hardcore off-road -P 8.25/10, L 5.75/10

If your reading the mags to work out what to buy youve got reeeel problems
Example Overlander hands disco 4wd of the year then drives a patrol, cruiser and disco along the Anne Beadell and declare the disco crap and the cruiser king
Perhaps a phonecall was made regarding future adverting comitments of certain manafactures in their Mag

Just my real life experience here, as I almost agree the rating
for those 2 cars from the review in the stock standard form.
As you can see there is no Reliability comparo of the cars in the test, which I think should be one of main factors in scoring the cars in the review.

Stan,

I'm not disagreeing with you but how can a journo that drives the car once for maybe a week if they are lucky report on things like reliability. This subject would be best left to the punters who buy the vehicles and live and breath in them for years. Just my thoughts, if any mags want a reporter in regards to Nissan, call me. ;-))

Trevor.

I would go for the most recent that you can afford. Look underneath and if theres no dings even better. Turbo's can be fitted by Denco so don't be stressed if its not turboed.

Both will do the job you want admirably. And both will go further offroad than many people ever do.

Price a turbo then go shopping. Look also for good tyres, Coopers are best, fridges, Waeco are best, dual batteries, Rotronics are best, lights, IPF are best, locking diffs, Lockrite are best, UHF radio, GME are best, suspension, OME are best, rear drawers, Outback are best, friends, EO is best.

Oooooooooooh! you Terang terror you.

You only said half of that dribly diatribe to sweet talk me into handing 'that' CAP over.

And, as for you Roachie (he who through away his $50 levy voucher) just get on with solving the O/heating problem with that 'thing' that you drive. Also, lay off Truckster as it would seem that he has bought a 3.0L GU and now has 'things' on his mind.
