I am trying to locate some caravan storage wheels that I saw at the Rosehill Caravan and Camping show last year.

At the time I had no requirement for them, but now when I do, I can not find them.

They were basically a cast metal wheel center that was just a bit larger than a brake drum. You remove your standard wheels and put the storage wheels on. This lowers the van by something in the order of 200mm or thereabouts so you can fit it into a normal height garage.

Anyone know what the brand is or who distributes these ?

Thanks,
Mark

not heard of that one, mate. We've just ordered a new van after agonising whether to go for an off-roader etc because the extra height would've been 70mm or so too high to go under the car port. Letting air out wasn't quite enough, then we thought of getting a couple of old uns from the wreckers but then the thought of getting back from a trip and the extra pharting around changing wheels....aaaaagh forget it. Got them to re-enforce the frame and bolt in cupboards instead of screwing them in. Should do us for most trips then tent it to the more inaccessible. Interesting one though. Will ask at my local dealer.

Yes, I know what you mean by the extra pharting around, but it would only be for the next 5 or 6 months while we are having house renovations done. But by the sounds of it these wheels are very expensive.

Wow,

Did not realize they were that expensive, might have to rethink this one.

Go to the wreckers & get a set of old steel rims to suit whatever you got,& take off the tyres.

This is one of the options I am looking at, but from what I have determined If I just run the 15" rims and no tires I can lower the van by aound 110 mm, I need to lower it by 200mm. This means I need around about a 11" rim, but this size wouldn't fit over the brake drums, the brake drums are like 10" diameter.

Mark.
Saw the wheels you are looking for at Kratmans Caravans in Sandgate Road Virginia (Brisbane). Give them a call and they might be able to tell you where you can get some

Thanks Peter,

I will give them a call, but from what I have just read, they are pretty expensive.

I made up a set for my van. Got a free pair of bent rims from the wreckers, cut the centre out with a gas axe and welded the centres into a 3" wide offcut from a 10" steel pipe. Compared to the $450 i was quoted for a purchased set, my freebee's work an absolute treat and my van now resides inside the garage. I use a rattle gun and my hilift jack on the van to change the tyres and have got the changeover down to 5 minutes flat. Also allows you to easily check the wheel bearings before every trip, not a bad side benefit.

Cheers

That sounds like a plan !

I had actually just considered getting some discs made out of 3/8 or 1/2" plate and running it on these, but was not sure if they would bend or how well they would roll. Then the thought was that I could put something like 1/8" strip about 3 or4" wide around the outside to make a steel tyre.

I like your idea.

Will start looking around for some suitable tube.

Thanks,
Mark
