I drove out to Mt. Webb on the weekend. (Friday arvo to Sunday arvo)

Took the Mereenie, back road to Papunya then the Kintore Road (Gary Junction Road) to Mt Webb and back.

Points of interest:

Stoppped at Kintore for some fuel. It was $1.71 per litre, only 10 cents more than at home. The Native Policeman was at the bowser and I asked him if he wanted to see my permits. He shook his head. (mmm maybe I shouldn't have bothered).

Mt Webb was awsome. Searched some hills 2 kms to the west for one of David Carnegies rockholes from 1897 without success. Found a fully operational solar powered bore with tank nearby though. It was great to have a wash.

I took a risk and went down the Sandy Blight Junction Road 30 kms to have a look at Tieken's Blazed tree from 1889. The tree is there but it is in pretty bad shape now. Fallen over and in a state of rapid deterioration I would guess there wont be much left in 10 or 20 years. Shame, perhaps they (whose they) should put a cage around it or something.

Saw a total of 4 Beadell plaques (replica or original).

The cruiser had no problems though I am having trouble with the tray slowly falling to bits. This will be a warrenty issue when it gets its first service at 10000km.

Total kms - 1570

Cheers

Eq.

Hi Eq
Sounds like it was a good w/e trip, but not sure why you say, "I took a risk and went down the Sandy Blight Junction Road 30 kms" . Is it closed or needs a permit you didnt have?
Cheers pesty

Pesty,

The CLC is no longer issueing permits for the Sandy Blight Junction road until (they say) the NT Government upgrades the road. So technically I was trespassing.

That's a great area, although the last time I was there it was 'slightly damp underfoot'. Papunya was just a lake, as was Kintore. All dry now of course. It's a great drive into history, isn't it ? Haven't been down the Docker River road, too many bits under some trees at the turnoff :)))

you lucky bugger. I don't have the map in front of me - where is Mt Webb? I know Mt Leisler (near Kintore) and Mt Tietkens (along the Desert Rd in WA).

From memory the back road off the Mereenie is at Camels Hump and goes through Ikuntji (HB Community)? The track to the west that goes to Mt Liebig the back way past Mt Crawford is a magic drive.

Hi Bob,

Mt Webb is just north of the Gary Junction road (about 200 metres) maybe 70-80kms west of the border.
The Tietkens marked tree is at the base of Mt Leisler.

There are several ways to get from the Mereenie Loop road to Papunya. The CLC only give permission easily to go from Beer Can Corner turnoff (about 25 kms west of Glen Helen) to a point on the road 20 kms east of Papunya. The way you mentioned may be allowed, but not without the CLC going through the traditional owners which may take some time. I would like to go that way at some time as I want to visit Glen Edith and Mt Solitary.

Geez Equinox, you are bit of a worry. I cannot fathom why you would bother asking a policeman if he wanted to see your permit.

I told you before. No one is interested in Permits out in the bush.

Looks like the don't build Toyotas like they used to. But then again the corrugations are pretty horrific out to the west.

As you would know I cant let an unprovoked attack on toyotas go unchallenged. In my experience The trays which are outsourced are not up to the build quility of the magnificent tojo ute Havnt had one fall apart but the paint is of poor quality and can start letting rust in within weeks. more disturbing is that it appears to have the adhesive quality of sticky tape to a dusty ardboard box and is easily blown off by high pressure cleaners. While bulding anything up to the Toyota standard would be difficult I think a bit more effort should go into QC of their tray manafacturers especially in the paint department

Bob,
Mt Webb is about 10 kms East of "Ration Truck Site" and you can't miss it as the Telecom repeater is a km west. It has a trig cairn on north end, climb from the west side is easiest.
The track to the"very good water" bore starts only a couple of hundred metres west of Mt Webb and is the place where the last of the blacks came out of the bush to go to Kiwirrkurra community, where the truck resides safe and remains intact.
There you go,some interesting dribble for you lot aye wot Big John.
