The new LC 100 Series TD is due to arrive in a fortnight and I need to sort out tyres. The rims are alloy 17inch (GXL rims same as Sahara).
I think they all have Dunlop Grand Treks when supplied. I have heard they are bleep in sand and the sidewalls are thin.
I'd prefer BFG ATs (the preference of most fourby club members I believe).
How I go about changing the tyres? Through the dealer? Tyre dealer?
What should be the approx cost of the change over for 5 tyres?
If the cost is silly I guess I'll have to wear them out b4 changing. I do some off road and sand but avoid mud wherever possible.

Why not keep the original tyres for dagging around the place and have a new set of 4wd tyres for trips ?

From my experience the dealers will arrange c/o at cost so it's a good opportunity. If your dealer is prepared to go this way why not ask him if he'd provide a further set of rims and tyres to your spec. which you can bolt on for w/e activities etc. At cost price this may also be attractive?? I had the dealer arrange for the stock tyres to be swapped for 285/75 bfg mt's. A few of us now have bought patrols from different dealers and the additional cost was approx $600 c/o all up from all our experiences.

ev700,
What you describe it was I always have done. Get rid of those Grand Treks and have the dealer organise with the local tyre dealer to swap GT's over to BFG At's and it should only cost around $50 per rim. The reason why so cheap is the GT's are worth way more than the BFG AT's and the tyre dealer should be more than happy to flog brand new GT's and make a profit ontop of the fitting charge for the swap of around $50 per rim.
Regards,
Stuart M.
PS. My first set of BFGs on current 100series around 74,000kms. Great Tyre.

I tried thru the dealer when I bought the Patrol, some crap story and a cost of $780 was his answer,
Drove it home and into the local tyre dealer, drove out with BFG AT's, no cost, nada, zip. Happy with that deal i was.

I think you might have trouble getting BFG 17" tyres. Coopers are the only decent off-road tyre that come in 17".

A friend had them ( BFG'S) fitted to his V8 100 series 4 weeks ago. You should be able to negotiate them into the deal. I would hang onto them to belt around town with and use a more decnt tyre when the time comes.
Cheers

You were so right! Problem is staying legal in diameter in Qld.
Cooper 265X70X17 is the nearest it seems.

Hi ev700,
I swaped tyers from new to BFG AT just put 2nd set on at 85 k very happy(could have gone a bit longer, 285/75/16 $284ea ) would be worth your while doing a quick phone around.
If you are considering changing rim size you may want to check that toyota have not increased the brake rotor size. I read somewhere that this had been done, hence the bigger rim for clearance and cooling. Then again it could be just for looks. Good luck with what ever you decide.

Thanks everyone.
I am surprised that the Grand Treks are so dear but then I never priced them and haven't used Dunlop for years.
It is testament to the goodwill of the contributors to this site that you are all so cooperative in sharing your experiences
Thanks again
