Hi Peoples
We have just come back from a trip up north, we are starting to look at replacing my 3.0 litre Patrol GU my question is how
well do the prados tow we would be looking at a manual diesel Prado (new) we have a heavy duty off road camper trailer weight is about 900kg, do the prados pull
well up hills. We sit on about 110 kmph with the Gu what sort of mileage do you get with the prado and do anybody know when they will update the motor with the new one in the hilux.

The question was how does the vehicle tow... kw has almost no relevance towards this compared to torque. Yes the Patrol does offer more torque....
380nm@2000rpm in manual, 354nm@2000rpm in auto

Prado manages 343nm@2000rpm in either auto or man... Patrol is a larger class of vehicle so it should provide a more stable platform.. kw has little to do with towing... give me low down torque any day over high kw... especially for towing

I disagree.
Certainly , torque plays a part , and a large part , but equally , so does outright horsepower.
The question was about towing a rather large CT at 110kph. Torque will allow you to tow that van all day everyday with no problem , but if it doesn't have the horsepower to tow at speed it wont.
The Prado will EASILY tow anything you like behind it , no question , BUT , no way will it do it at Freeway Speeds.
Overlander did a comparo in the lastest addition , involving the Terracan and Pajero and they purposely left out the Prado , because of its motor . . . funny that.
Comming from a TD 3.0 Nissan to a Prado , towing speeds will be disappointing.

If your looking at Prado TD - wait until the new one comes out.

I own a current 120 series TD and recently towed a 700kg trailer around the Gulf and to
Lawn Hill NP etc. In the 4000 plus k's of dirt, bitumen, sand etc we averaged around 14l/100km. The car was loaded to the roof in the back with all the gear for the wife and 2 kids.
It is no rocket ship when fully loaded (especially with the 180lires of fuel onboard) but it will happily go everywhere I have asked it and cruises at 110kph without a struggle. I know people talk in kW a lot but with a diesel the all important number is torque...I have no idea how it compares with the Patrol but can tell you that the Prado has 343nm.
I have heard that the new motor is scheduled to come out in the new year sometime...maybe just rumour.
I was tempted by a Patrol but settled with the Prado due to the higher level of finish, constant 4x4, better standard features, and range with 180litre tanks.
Best of luck with your research.

The Prado is 2/3 weight of Nissan so when you compare
power to weight it have to drag - Prado wins :)

Dont get too excited about the new 3litre motor in the Prado next year if you are worried about fuel economy...
I have learnt recently that the new motor really burns fuel when loaded and doing 110kmh in a Hilux....
Where as the Patrol 3litre at the same speed with the same load is more fuel efficient...
Toyota claim 8.5lp100 and under above conditions got 13lp 100...
Nissan claim 10.8lp 100 and same conditions got 12.1lp 100...
At 100kmh Toyota got 11lp 100 and Nissan got 11.5lp 100...
Note: My Nissan has 133kw and 420nm and the Hilux could pull away from me at any time...

I have a 2004 Prado manual TD with DTronic (Oh what a difference). either with the boat (1.5 tonne) or camper (700kg) on the back, kids on board and all the fuel I have no probs towing at whatever speed (legally that is!)
I too was tossing up between the Patrol and Prado. I found the Patrol (2004) touchy to throttle input and stiil a bit archaic. The Prado ahd a 60/40 rear
seat and lap/sash
seat belts in all positions. I also agree with the finish. I don't know what the new Patrol is like but do believe that the Patrol probably has a tad more internal room.
If you buy the Prado, spend the $ a put a DTronic in it. You won't be disappointed. It changes the fuel timing and gives you far better response down low and also on the highway.
cheers
Rob

I agree with you in every point except ....
"but do believe that the Patrol probably has a tad more internal room"
The patrol is longer and wider in seating, leg room, cargo area, wheel base etc; etc; With rear seats removed we can sleep in the back of our GU patrol (I'm 5'9'').
Can't do that in a Prado. But you are right, finish is better and much better fuel carrying capacity in a prado.

How about this?
Terracan CRDi, 120 kW, 360 Nm (approx), 40 grand brand new, 7 seats, 5 year warranty.
About 9 L/100 km.
Value.
Value.
Value.
Not half bad off road either.
And did I mention that 5 year warranty?
Worth a look.
Cheers,
Jim.

Would agree with Jimbo on this topic. I have on two occasions been tailgated up a steep mountain (
Toowoomba Range) in my Terracan CRDi auto by both the latest 3Ltr Patrol & the latest 3Ltr Prado. Both times I have easily pulled away from them to such an extent that it brings a grin to ones face. I also have a 60 Series T/D Cruiser manual & it's like a snail compared to it. They are a very quick vehicle & strangely enough they are heavier than the Prado & Pajero. All this with great economy & great price.

Clearance is a bit average in standard form. I've fitted a 45mm lift kit and slightly larger tyres. I do a fair bit of off raod work with vehicles of all makes and types; the only times I have got stuck it has been down to my own stupidity or lack of experience.

I have a Prado 120 (3.0 TD) and tow a 17 foot (internal) tandem van (1600Kg) with ease. Recently towed it to
Darwin & back with no dramas. Sitting on 100-105 kph I average 17l/100Km. If you want to sit on 110kph - it will without any drama - but I normally only tow at 95kph.
I know it has less torque & power than most other big diesels, but it has done everything I've asked of it!
