Greetings,
thetas right 2005 GUIV 4.2 T/D I had the clunky drive train, and put up a post regarding this.
Well I just got it back from Nissan today, they replaced the diff in the rear.
I saw my diff on there work bench when I went back to pick up some work stuff out of it, and it looked fine no chips out of the gears, though the dealer claims when they pulled it apart the oil was black and there were metal shavings in there, and there was a lot of play in the pinion causing the clunking under load.
There claiming it would have been like that from factory.
Lucky I had it checked out and did not let time go by, I can see it now the vehicle out of warranty in 3yrs time, and those metal shavings slowly grinding away....
A bit surprised over the whole ordeal though not really bothered, it has been rectified no worries. though we will see if the clunking has gone, have not had a good drive as of yet.....
Babs...

The root or maybe one of the resins for all this might have been that the pinion bearing preload was not set correctly when first built.
Diff oil was Black after 6000k’s sounds a little funny, I recently changed my rear diff oil and it was still gold in colour after 122,000k’s.
At least it was all done free of charge you are now back on the road without too much drama I hope.
