Have read a heap of forums on the diesel vehicals, mostly Nissan Patrol by the looks, and if I hade my time over, would prob have bought a diesel if I knew I was going to buy a van and go round Australia.
I have the current model Prado in the 4.0L Petrol, and will be towing a 2400kg full van. Does anyone else out there tow with same vehical, how do you find it, and what sort of fuel consumption are you getting?
Have done some sums, and realsie it will be dearer, but a $20K changeover buys a lot of fuel instead.

When towing camper ~900kg it used around 18L per 100km...
How much fuel does it use while towing van?
I would recommend you put the Unichip in if you are planning
to use it for towing that much weight...

Unichip link

and

Link 2

Unichip will increase the power and torque and also might improve fuel economy specially if you go over 2000rpms... They are around $1250 fitted.

We have the 4.0litre Prado and tow a jayco camper which is approx 1500kg and we also get approx 16-18litres per 100km's. It jumps up to approx 20 when we travel with the van and a packed roof rack.

Hi there wunder77, at a rough guess I would say probably around 22 possibly even higher with that sort of weight behind you but as you said 20g buys you a lot of petrol. Good luck on the trip anyway hope all goes well and you have a safe return. Regards Steve

Wunnder77,

chip the engine, and fit a good exhaust system (incl extractors).

BTW there is a bunch of Prado related discussion on the Toyota Prado Owners list
