Last day of school hols so I thought I would take the kids on a short track near Mt Compass (about 45 mins from Adelaide) which has a couple of bog holes and a creek crossing plus a bit of rough descent and sand.

I had been before so had no real concerns but we were about 2/3 into the biggest boghole and the engine coughed and shook like buggery and died on me. OH S#&T!

Tried for ages to restart it. It would fire ok, give a couple of shakes and die again. Finally got it to stay running (and I use the term loosly .... shaking more like it) and limped out of the water.

Couldn't get it to run. It would idle but everytime I put any load on it it stalled.

My thinking was wet plug leads and the like but couldn't see any problems. It hadn't actually been that deep.

Finally found the problem. The water had ripped loose the plastic cowling around the bottom of the fan and it had entangled itself in the fan and stopped it, causing the stall.

A bugga to untangle but fine once the fan was freed.

Not sure if I will even replace the cowling, what do you guys think?

Thanks
Trevor

Im a believer in all things mechanical have a purpose. The cowling would direct airflow over the engine, and protect the fan from damage caused by foreign objects entering. (just unfortunately not itself in your case.) If it were mine I would replace the cowling & see if I could attach it more robustly.

Now I have it on very good authority that the cowling is very important in getting the air to flow as you want it too. The authority?? Myth Busters spent ages making a cowling to go around a fan so that they could get good boost from the fan and I imagine that it is very important in an idling engine to stop the air just doing circles in the engine bay. You want to drag it through the radiator.

Hi guys,

Correct me if I'm wrong but if your vehicle stalls in water shouldn't you only try to start it immediately afterwards and if it wont start then have it pulled out of the water. Trying to start the engine increases the chance of destroying it from water ingestion????

Cheers
Matt.

Disconnect the fan belt first before fording next time maybe?

The cowling is designed to give proper airflow over the radiator. I'd replace it.

Cheers......
