Hey all,
Just wondering... I've got a TX3200 and in the manual it states that OPEN or GROUP scan is a 'dealer selectable' option.
Mine is currently set to open but I would like to change this to group.
Do I really need to go to a dealer or am I able to change this myself.
Also I realise that the 3200 is relatively simple but are there any other features that can be altered or re-programmed?
Thanks

I've got a 3400 which is selectable between group and open. i have never bothered changing it and never felt a need to. With your 3200 you can remove channels from the open scan easily which might achieve what you want without going to a dealer.

While on the subject of GMEs, I notice from Prestige there is not much difference in price between a 3200 and (say) a 4400.
The radio is needed for a LC 100 series.
I am wondering what practical advantages there are in a 4400 for a non-technical person?

4400 has more features but main difference is size and position of the speaker. The features my 4400 has over the 3200 don't actually get used by me.
Unless you have a spare DIN hole in your dash then get a 3200 or 3400.

Thanks for the straight reply. It is always tempting to spend more but as I say, I'm not that much into gizmos.

The 4400 has an adjustable sqelch with
the knob on the front - handy feature also.

Well I do sometimes use the adjustable squelch. I adjust it up quite high most of the time to reduce the amount of unwanted background static that you sometimes get blasted with for a second or two. However when I use the 3200 I don't generally find the need to have it. Maybe it is because the 4400 is in a petrol and the 3200 is in a diesel? I don't know where in the 4400s squelch range that the 3200 is preset. Maybe you can adjust this position with the software and cable?
However as I said before, all this is irrelavent if you don't have the room/position to mount a 4400. Maybe you could remove the double DIN radio and replace it with a single DIN and the UHF? My Rodeo had a pocket down the bottom of the dash which I removed to reveal a DIN hole.

I had my 4400 in that pocket position. Great little spot for it.

Just fiddling with the 'scan' function yesterday.
I think that if you re-read the manual it states that you have Group & Open scan on the set as it comes from the factory.
OPEN scan covers all the channnels you want in the scan. If 1-60 then it takes a while to go through a cycle.
GROUP scan does the same with the addition of scanning one chosen channel more often. That way you will catch earlier anything received on that chosen channel.
What the manual states is that if you want 2 OPEN scans then the dealer can re-program the set.

In newer GME radios, the only difference between OPEN and GROUP scan is that GROUP scan "inserts" the priority channel in the scan every couple of scanned channels. If this is what you want, then you will need to see a dealer to get it changed.
GROUP scan comes from GME with no channels tagged to scan and OPEN scan comes with ALL channels tagged to scan, but either can be modified to scan whatever channels you want.
Another feature that people often overlook is the ability to disable buttons. If you hold a button down while turning on the radio, you will hear a low beep and the button is disabled. Repeat this to re-enable it. On the 3400 this also applies to the CALL button on the microphone. I've lost count of how many people bring their radios back because their SELCALL doesn't work anymore! They had the microphone jammed in the centre console or something and turned the radio on and PRESTO, one disabled SELCALL function. This is mentioned in the user manuals.
Hope this helps...
