Ive been reading the forums with interest in relation to the GU Patrol. Ive got an early 2002 model 3lt so hopefully the engine failure issues wont effect me!!!.
Mine has been running
well with only 2 minor problems in 97000 ks. Dust has entered the tail lights, a cosmetic issue. A trip to the local dealer about 6 months ago didnt fix it, still havent heard from them for a warrenty job. The other problem is a squeaking belt when I drive thru a puddle. I live in far western NSW so I dont see puddles very often, but when it squeaks I turn off the aircon and it stops. Anyone had this problem and know a cure?

I hope your right re the Engine, look under the Turbo and see if a sensor is fitted there,if there is such a device you are in the later engine range and should have no problems.
But the engine is not the only weakness with this model.
My Turbo fitted with the replacement engine by Nissan lasted only 20,000 km.
My mates 2001 model turbo just expired at 56,000 km.
The squeal you hear is most likely the idler pulley bearing, another quick failing item known to have a short life.
If you can keep them going they are a great performing truck but there is no doubt the early models were problematic.
Regards

sorry to tell you this
but my understnding is the 3.0 l td engine upgrade happened in oct 2002 builds on re the extra oil sensor etc
so anything built prior to oct 2002 can be considered possibly suspect and you are wise to take an extended warranty cover if you can
i had a july build ser 2 - 2001 and never had a moments trouble with it in 127K kms - which i have since traded in on an october build ser 4 - 2004 which is going
well
a dtronic upgrade chip majkes a hell of a lot of difference to the bottom end performance but drops the fuel consumption down from 9 kms per litre to 8kms
great truck but a shame about the early engines - and an occassional turbo prob continues on but the Toys turbos also do go bang just as often as the patrols
have you tried a no slip belt spray -
water on the belt will often make it squeal
see you

AFAIK the easiest way to check whether it's the "danger" model or not is by the tail lights. The series III (ie the "OK" ones) have the newer tail lights with a clear section in both sides.....the series II had an all-red lense on the driver's side.

My 1998 patrol emits a terrible noise at times. You would thing that the motor was going to fall apart? A/C belt. Nissan know about it as some people bring their patrol in on a flatbed because the noise is so bad. When it happens, I spray the belt with RP7 and if the noise goes away, my pulse rate returns to normal.
Hope this helps
Jim

Ours is Jan 2002 - passes the tail light test. From websites i found the major change took place Oct 2001. Over 98,000 and still going strong - some heavy towing done. Hoping it will keep on going
well. Only problem was when a hose blew off the turbo - it still got us and the heavy caravan home before we found out what the "BANG" was (we weren't far from home at the time).

I have a September 2003 model (III series). In recent months I did a fair bit of driving in muddy
water and hap problems. It started out sounding like a rough spinning noise. The guys at the dealership said it was the alternator bearing, so it was replaced under warranty. The noise faded and then quickly returned. This time they said it was the bearing for airconditioning clutch. It too was replaced under warranty. I was told that after each muddy offroad trip I do I should give everything a good squirt with a high pressure hose to clear out and residual mud. Wasn't all that impressed with that as I am planning to do a big trip and I won't be able to get my hands on one after each muddy encounter. As a result I am going to extend my warranty so I have the protection.
