Started the car this evening and the fuel tank caution lamps is on, thankfully it has just decided to play up today as I only got got back from the Flinders yesterday.

The book says to take it to Toyota for repair, however experience tells me to leave the Dealer as the last resort. Does anyone know how to fix this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Tony

Do you mean the fuel light (little bowser symbol) or a different light?

Check the electrical conections on the sub tank tranfer pump located in front of the tank.could only be a poor conection.had simlar problem no difflock dash light, wiggled and checked all the plugs on the transfer box and its working again.
I only ever made one mistake
and that's when I thought I was wrong!

Obviously the vehicle is still going with fuel being delivered OK. Does the aux tank still work? If so, and the light doesn't annoy you, I'd say ignore it.

good call....you have most probably got some bleep e fuel from someones jerry can and the filter on the transfer pump is clogged. You wont be able to transfer from the sub anymore, pull the fuel out of the sub tank, clean the filter on the inlet side of the pump and then disconnect the battery to reset the light.

Andrew,
thanks for your reply, I avoid jerry fuel, however when travelling you never know what quality the fuel is. I had checked the sub tank assembly looked OK, and checked all the plugs on the whole system, I didn't think to disconnect the battery, any way the I took it to Windsor and the guys there were very helpful, after deleting a unlisted fault code, they couldn't replicate the problem. Suggested the alternator may have spiked the system, I was running heavy loads off the alternator and the previous owner had the regulator set at 14.9V or the transfer switch feels suspect and only charged me $40.
I hope the problem doesn't reoccur.

Hi Tony
Most servos out back have old tanks...this can cause problems for the sub transfer system. If the pump pulls too much current, it will go into fault code. Its a good idea to buy a filter and add it to the pipework b4 the pump, make it a steel outer from the early efi datsuns and you will be right as far as rupturing it.
Also, FYI, the processor that controls this system is behind the LHS plastic in the 7 and 8 seat position, or directly below the last window on the passenger side. Pulling the plug on it does thesame as disconnecting the battery, without having to reset anything else. :-)
