My transfer pump has been giving me more grief than I am prepared to take and was all set to replace it with a shiny new one till I was quoted an astromical amount. A mechanic aquaintence has assured me that he replaced one on a GQ with a petrol pump off a Mazda. The car in question is currently in the Simmo area and completed a trip up the Cape last year. Sounds a bit scary to me but, it IS just a pump so there aren't any obvious problems. Anybody had a similar fix or come up with another? Patrol transfer pumps are a sealed unit and I'm told can't be repaired. They have a very fine piston clearance and should have some sort of filter between the aux.
tank and the pump itself. Why do ya always have to find these things out AFTER the event!

Yep,
Your friend is correct (as long as yours is a diesel) then the transfer pump is the same as the mazda ones and you can get it from Repco (or similar place) for just a few $$$

Thanks for your response GU, the old girl is a 4.2 TD DX. Sounds like that's the way to go.

G'day. I too was having transfer pump problems. Had to disconnect the battery for 10 mins or so every now and then to reset the computer. But turned out to be the old lack of a good earth problem. However it did encourage me to install a manual over ride switch. Will look into a more economical replacement for later after reading the cost of a genuine pump. Cheers

Gidday Charlie, thanks for the response mate, I started doing the battery disconnect/computer reset thing at
Camp Beadell and carried on to
Laverton and then all the way over the A.B. The pump would not reset after we got back into Qld and I have been waiting to use some fuel up before tinkering to see if the problem was a dirty fuel supply or stuffed pump or even an rs controller. I'll have a play with a mazda petrol pump and see if that fixes things up.
