Kev I have a canvas awning I got from ARB, cost was $300.00, there are more expensive ones, but this suits me when fishing, easy to set up, rolls up into a bag, includes 2 x poles which roll up in the awning, guide ropes(heavy duty) and 2 x pegs. Have it attached to the canopy on my ute.

Cheers

Kevin ,
I had a look at the ARB one and it seems to be too small - even in the advert for it , the guy under it is in the sun !

southern cross canvas do an awning connected to the roof rack - I'm sure they have a distributor in perth, and I remember them being around $200.

Let your fingers do the walking. Look in the yellow pages. There are many canvas shops in the Perth metropolitan area. Look under 'Canvas or Upholsterer, Motor Trimmers' ect. They all work with canvas & would be cheaper then going to places like ARB where you pay for the name! Cheers.

Good advice, far cheaper and will probably be of better canvas than some of the expensive stuff for sale.
From the adverts they only look big enough to give a bit of shade when the sun is directly overhead!

I had mine made up by a canvas supplier, about 3.5mtrs long by 3 deep and it gives excellent shade. Holes every 300mm and you can adjust where you put the poles to give maximum shade for the time of day....... then sit back for one or two cold ones.

Someone recently posted their homemade shelter on this forum - a cheap tarpaulin wrapped into a poly drain pipe clamped to the roof rack. From memory it had end caps on the pipe and a steel rod through the centre onto which the tarp was wrapped.

All up cost probably close to $70

There is a pic of mine in my rig pics. It is in 100mm sewer pipe with with a slot cut in the side. Awning rolls onto a length of half inch gal pipe.
If you had to buy everything new, would cost about $120. If you know a plumber, have access to stuff, or are happy to find and use second hand it would cost bugger all.
I put a detailed description of how it was made on another forum when asked for details. I can probably find it and PM to any member interested.

I made one for about $80 that really works well. Can't post pictures so will try to explain. Look at photos of Norms rig. I screwed a piece of timber to the tarp at the end away from the vehicle. As wellas making the tarp more stable when erected, just roll the tearp around this piece when putting it away. Rool the poles inside at the same time. Ours extends about two and a half feet beyond the windsreen so we get lots of shade. Almost no flex when driving, even over centre oz corrugations. A further mod. I bought a tarp big enough so that it drops down about three feet after the timber support between the tent poles. Very habdy to be able to peg this out to provide some wind and rain break. In severe weather, we shrten the tent poles so that the extension now forms a vertical side that can be pegged all the way to the ground. This also gives a steep slope to the annexe roof which is much more stable and weather proof in extreme weather.
When travelling, we just run about 5 okkie straps around the rolled up awning and it is fine.
The whole thing is bolted to the full length roofrack.

With mine, I riveted aluminium annexe track on both sides and the back of my fiberglass canopy ($7 p/mt.) but could also rivet it to a roof basket, bought some cheap H/D polytarp (12' x 8') and some extendable tent poles.

I had our local canvas man sew a rope into one side of the polytarp to slide in the annexe track.
It's so easy to put up and take down and it works a treat.

I did the same as sudsy, but my mate bought a set of cheap surf bars and we went halves. We riveted the ally piece to the surf bar, had a rope sewn in to the tarp, bought a couple of poles and ropes, plus extra ropes in case trees are nearby, and some large plastic sand spikes.

It all rolls up into a nice little bundle at the rear of the car and I wrap it up with 2 occy straps, then take it off in one easy piece when we get home.

I would love to show pictures but I'm stuffed if I can get them to work. HHMMPPHHHH.
