Ok you guys are going to say why consider an auto ! Well at work we had a TD Prado manual & I had a 97 TD Surf with the same motor as the Prado but with the auto; well I believe the auto was heaps better in all conditions except major downhill bits, uphill & sand in rough stuff the auto had it beat.
Anyway has anyone driven the new hilux & compared both the manual & auto ? What did you think ?
Does the Hilux have a centre diff lock as does the Prado & Surf I had ( I don't think it does) ?
Also do I see right, they still have drum rear brakes ?

Anyway at present I have a 3 door Rav & even putting 4 bags of groceries in it makes it overloaded - everything falls out the back when you open the tailgate.

So I'm looking at a second hand Hilux Dual Cab - have not made up my mind either the new or old, but the auto if it is anything like how hard the Surf went it would be great, but the Surf had all these aftermarket add on bits though.

Cheers Beddo

Not sure what fredd is trying to say, but I can tell you that when I was looking at buying my next 4X4 a few years back, I test drove a manual 3.0 patrol and then an auto 3.0 patrol and as you say, the auto shlts on the manual in most conditions except for downhill braking.

After talking to few ppl who have the manual one, I'm glad I got the auto.

Hi,

I would reckon the auto would be fine.

I am always amazed when I go off road with other 4x4 auto's how little stress they seem to put on the drive train.

At times my manual Patrol is screaming at high revs (say 3500) and I am stuck at single speed because it is not the right situation to change gears.

I find this particularly with sand driving

The next car I buy will definately be an auto for 4x4ing

Autos these days are taller geared in overdrive, and better in every respect except for engine braking and loosing traction purposely. My 80 is auto and i wouldnt buy a manual now that ive seen how easy it climbs and even better, it doesnt damage tracks as much or accidently fall off the road either (on the hard bits)
Maintenance is the key to a long relationship with an auto. Budget a service ($120) every 2 years and your sweet.

I agree on all points, maintance and oil coolers for autos are good investments.

I would ask, why you would consider a Manual these days...
