how do the car companies come up with each Vehicles towing capacities
after browsing through the latest 4wd monthly it came up with up some interesting figures with a breaked trailer
all of the land cruisers have a rating of 3.5 t
but the patrols
4.2 td wagon has 3.5
while the td 4.2 ute only has one of 2.5 t when they are almost the same Vehicle
bar 1 is a wagon & the other is a wagon

i have 2.8 gu 99 which has a 2.8 tow rating but anything much over a 1t it stuggles with at highway speeds.

im don't wanna start a toyota vs nissan debate here but from my understanding the drive chain in a nissin is twice as strung & same with the gear box & clutch (in the 4.2 model)

& but the more strange one is the f250 has one of breaked trailer only 2270kg & unbreaked 1600kg

regards adam

2.8 doesnt have the same gearbox as the others... it has the 300zx gearbox.....

There is the weak point.

What would you rather try stopping a 3ton trailer with - a heavy wagon, or a light arse ute that would lockup the rears ?

I Could be wrong but i'd try the wagon time after time.

YMMV

I think you'll find towing capacity is related to the weight of the vehicle doing the towing.
Has nothing to do with the drive train, engine or the vehicles actual ability to pull that weight.
It's related to the vehicles ability to stay on the road when trying to stop the load.

It does have to do with the drive train. For example the GU 3lt with an auto has a 2.5t towing capacity and the manwel has a 3.5t. The only difference is the trans.

Hey, Leroy, my GUIII 3.0td manual only has a towing rating of 3.2 tonnes. The towbar says 3.5tonne, but the little sticker inside the left hand rear door stipulates 3.2tonne only.

Something to be aware of, me thinks.

Cheers

The differnce between the 4.2 ute & the 4.2 wagon is more to do with vehicle loads, The wagons towing capacity of 3.5T is only when it's totally empty with just a driver & passenger with no gear, load the wagon right up to max. & towing capacity drops down to 2.5T from memory. (It's all in the owners manual)

But with the ute they have had to allow for a load on the back as well as towing cap, even then I think there is a load verses towing capacity chart listed in the owners manual.

Never rely on the sales brocures allways check the owners manuals & or placards inside vehicle.
Cheers.
