Afternoon All!
I have owned a stretched 75 series for a number of years now and am trying to resolve a problem with a clunking front end, most noticeable when turning the steering when stationary in car parks etc!
When I say Clunk I mean CLUNK and bystanders step sideways when it happens.
On closer inspection with me under the vehicle and a token driver in the cab, I found that the clunk is caused by the leaf packs walking sideways when you turn the steering wheel - I suppose as the
suspension loads up lateraly with the traction from the tyres etc. The movement is small, probably only a couple of mm but its enough.
The local garage had a go with a waddy to try and tighten the leaf straps but the effect was only temporary.
Needless to say i put a winch on the front this year and decided a new leaf pack, from our friends at Repco, for the weight with a two in lift might kill two birds with one stone - and so it did for three months but now the noise is back. Time for a lateral think and this time made up a couple of plates with a bolt top and bottom to go alongside the leaf pack to stop the leaves moving laterally. That has worked to a degree and it only emits a loud clunk just when you think the problem is solved.
My question to all is, am I alone in this and if not, any
bright ideas.
Another thought tho - has anyone changed one of these to coils or is it even possible.
The problem is a purely sensory one as in all other respects this truck is a ripper.
After much mucking about and discussions with the
suspension guru's I was informed that they all did this and tho they could put new springs in the front it would most likely recur. Helpful - NOT!!
Thanking you form any input

I have a troopy HZJ75 1998 model . Usually goes CLUNK around corners when its raining and
the springs slide . I just ignore it .

Glenno
Probably should have mentioned that the noise was worse in the wet.
I even tried emptying a can of lanotec onto the leaf packs with no success.

I think this was also discussed on the TROOPYOZ
forum .

Go to yahoo groups /troopyoz . Do a search on the message board for clunks and you will see hundreds of posts .

Hi John,
I have had many 75s incl a stretched 13 seater and you will NEVER permanantly fix this. If you remove the front spring packs, split the pack, clean the leaves and grease them about every 6 months it helps but if you add another 2 of the wrap around straps to stop sideways movement you may have more sucess. I never worried about the latter just put up with it.

John
It may have been me who suggested the LANOTEC.
I find it is the 'antz pantz' for this residual problem with spring packs.
However, as stated above it isn't permanent and I find I have to do it regularly.
Having said that, I had it up on hoist not so long ago changing the shakels to anti inversion ones.
This caused the axles to hang/drag down - thus opening the spring leaves to the extent that I could easily see into them.
Yep! dry and rusty.
Hosed the suckers out with LANOTEC and haven't had a peep out of them since, even after I presure cleaned a ton of mud off them later on.
Try it, its a cheap fix if it works.

Mine makes same noise to- mostly in the rain, been told the same, they all do it. Pretty nasty noise though, sounds like its going to snap in half but doesn't worry me now knowing what it is.
Re the coils, yes but at large (about $2500) cost. Although thats for a five link Calbah set up that will have about a billion % more wheel travel.

Hi John, Have you thought about Parabolic springs?, No steel to steel contact.
Have a look at www.4wdsystems.com.au they do a kit for $2199 I hope this helps

Thanks to all.
Its heartening to know that its not just a "me" thing and am not alone with this problem.
I'll take your advice and work my way up from from practical and affordable fixes to the stage of - "is it worth it or just turn the music up."
Ken: a further go with the lanotec as you suggest would be worth the effort with the anti-inversion shackles as you suggest so may try that as an affordable starting point.
Matt: thanks for the info re: coils but probably a bit rich for my blood tho it sounds to be a pretty good fix with a the added advantage of articulation and not just getting rid of the noise.
Steve: I know little about parabolic springs apart from they are supposed to be better at load carrying but will investigate.
I noticed the DAKAR leaf packs supplied by ARB have bolt type brackets for the wraps on the spring pack but when I asked them the above questions at Osbourne
Park recently I was met with a glazed expression.
I also telephoned the supplier of the packs that I recently installed, Maxi-Trac supplied by Repco and was told that such a noise was entirely new in their experience.
Any way, armed with all your helpful advice I will proceed and will come back when I solve the problem.
Kind Regards
John G
