Hi,
Did the tappets on the patrol on the weekend but couldn't find the timing mark on the timing case. No dramas finding it on the pulley but couldn't find the corresponding mark to line up to. Just took a chance as I know it should be at approx 11am. Any ideas were it is???? Any chance of a photo.

Just going out on a limb hear, But if no mark is evident it is possible that the timing mark on the Pulley (Sprocket) need’s to be aliened with the gasket mating surface on the head generally within 3mm is acceptable.
This is how it is done on some engines.

Sorry the 4.2 is a pushrod isn’t it? not a OHC.
Well chit there must be a mark on the cover. There is another Possibility but I will stop confusing you and let someone who has worked on this engine give the correct method.
Sorry

G'day Austravel,
It sure is a bl@@dy hard thing to hard thing to find if ya dunno where the bl@@dy h*ll it's hidin'!!!.........
With the aid of a
bright light, look down sorta past the pwr steering pump pulley, & you'll see that one of the 'injection pump drive gear cover' retaining bolts is fairly close to one of the
water pump retaining bolts ('round about 7 o'clock on the w/pump)....
The timing mark is a "ridge" cast onto the timing cover, & it "hides" just below the head of the aforementioned 'injection pump drive gear cover' retaining bolt....
There is a very narrow "window" through which one can actually see the mark
(w/- all belts, hoses etc. in place), so it may take a while to get the angle right, but once you've located it you'll say .. "Geez, how did I miss that???" :-))........
Hope I've explained it in a manner which can be understood;-))
Sorry, can't help w/- a photo, & I don't have a GU TD42T w/
shop manual, but
Gregory's #512 (GQ) manual has a pretty good illustration on p36 (& p48)....
Hope this helps...

Thanks Ed,
Will have another look tonight, I spent at least 1/2 hour looking for it and in the end just took a guess.

Hi Austravel
The firing order on the 4.2 is 1,4,2,6,3,5 use a ring spanner on the power steering pump to roll motor over to get No-1 at T.D.C & adjust No-6 , No-4 adj No-3, No-2 adj No-5, No-6 adj No-1(already done) No-3 adj No-4, No-5 adj No-2
13 thou for inlet & outlet thats 1thou less than normal as you allow for concave wear that the feeler gauge wont measure.
hpoe that helps
Cheers Steve.

Thanks Steve, the biggest drama is finding the marks to make sure I'm on TDC. Couldn't see it on the timing cover only one the harmonic balance.
