I have just witnessed a mate of
mine change the fuel filters on his truck, and I am in a state of shock as to the poor quality fuel we have here.
It was a cloudy milky green colour. I suggested he go back to the service staion and complain, but he assured me he has already done this to no avail. He has also changed his point of purchase a few times too, but all seem the fuels are similar.
He just has to change the filters every 5,000k's and he has 3 of them inline, and everytime there is gunk in them. This truck has only done 100,000k's, and his previous trucks have had similar problems!
Now to my question, I am going to put a second fuel filter on my 3.0td Patrol, and need to know where is the best place to install it and which one has the best filtration. Do I need to worry about the extra restriction in the fuel line as far as the injector pump is concerned?
Thanks in advance.
BTW, anyone coming to Tassie had better consider this too!

Hi,
Ultra low suplur diesel IS GREEN in colour.
Should not be cloudy, but green is definitely ok.

I have just fitted a second filter to my GU 3.0 litre diesel, this was after my dealer advised me to do so as the replacement fuel pumps cost a fortune.
To mount the second filter( which was a combined
water trap and filter) I made a bracket that bolted to the existing filter body mounts.
The location was behind the existing and between the brake booster,I then just linked them in line using brass fittings and fuel hose.
No difference in performance whatsoever with the
water trap version being the first to receive the fuel from the
tank and the original filter the last.

Thanks for that useful information, much appreciated :-)
Can you let me know what brand the 2nd filter was and about how much please.
Also, have you noticed any extended service life of the original filter?
Many thanks,
Peter

Peter the unit was a fleetguard (combined filter and
water trap).
I bought it from Coburg truck spares in Campbellfield Victoria (speak to Harry)
I would think any truck spares place would keep them though.
Some fiddling is required with the treads on the filter body however as they are imperial threads(made in USA)any engineering
shop should be able to convert the threads as I did on the brass metric fittings.
Cost was around $120.

Denco also put out a screw-on adaptor fitting that goes onto a normal Nissan primer head (same as you already have) and the adaptor allows you to use the Fleetguard (or any one of a number of similar filters) that only cost about $8-. This unit has a glass bowl/
water trap.
I've got one fitted, but just used it to replace the original filter. I also have a Morison's DeBug unit before the filter...( see www.morison.com.au) . This unit has 3 strong magnets inside which pre-filters any algae or other stuff (like sand etc) and doesn't have any effect on the fuel's flow rate.
I have heard reports that a 2nd filter on the 3L Patrol does cause the pump to be over-worked trying to get the fuel through twice as much filtration.

Hi Guys,
Iim not sure about the filter on the Nissan 3.0 but I know for the DiD Pajero that the factory filter is rated at 3 micron and the Lucas/Denco units only filter down to 8 microns. In this case the Lucas/Denco unit would be Ok as a pre filter but not to replace the factory unit as it will let a LOT more gunk through to the pump and injectors.
