Hi all . I'm contemplating a trip to the Vic High country over the New Year Break.. Any advice regarding general climate/ river levels etc this time of year.. I'm bracing myself for an assumed fairly busy period but any other "warnings" advice would be appreciated..

As Queenslander's we think the Victorian High country is just great.
We have been there a few times and just love it.

We tend to go before Xmas as I think Qld school holidays start earlier but we have been able to camp wherever up until Boxing Day then it becomes more problematic. Found places like Howqua packed out but so long as you are flexible and just move on you are bound to find a good camp site.

Not being a local, we gave utmost respect to smoke palls and heavy rain as most river crossings would be interesting after heavy rain but so would the steep tracks.
If it rained heavy be ready to stay put for little while.

Craig's Hut, Bluff hut, over to Hewitt Hut and Wonangatta River, Dargo etc are great places as were the mining areas we always found other travellers on the road but found a camp without too much trouble.

Go for it but go as early as you can

Coyote,

I have spent the last 6 New Years in the Vic High Country, mostly around Tom Groggin.
River levels will depend on rain and how much snow melt there is in the area. The weather is so hard to say, I have been down there and there and it has snowed on Boxing Day and very hot the following day. How many people are there, that is hard to say, but you can count on a convey of 5/6 vehicles having a great time when I go there.

You been there for last 10 yrs, next time try it with your eyes open.

G'day Coyote ,
Best time of year to go to the High Country !!
All the tracks are open - and the weather is usually fine .
All the mountain flowers are in bloom .
The river crossings are usually at their lowest levels .
Except after 'occasional' heavy rainfall .
You will need very warm and very cool styles of clothing and sleeping gear .
The climate still has 'dramatic changes' from day to evening .
Best camping spots are on the more remote tracks - so be prepared to take some
diversions from the more popular camping sites .
Hope you enjoy your trip !!
We go 'every year' - without fail !!

Hi Coyote

Don't forget the Aerogard! When we were there almost two years ago the files were just everywhere and there were heaps of them. Other than that, enjoy this truly beautiful part of Oz

Penguin -
Good point about the flies !
Last years trip was ok !
The previous two years they were a - 'huge problem' .
Lot's of Westerly winds blowing the flies in from the inland areas .
Forget the Aerogard - they seem to like this stuff .
We have found that - 'RID' - is the best solution .
Also - we now carry 'Hat Fly Nets' - that fit over your Akubra etc .
They can be purchased at any camping shop in the High Country for about six or seven dollars and are a great piece of kit .
Don't go to the High Country in Summer without one !!
But also - don't let this issue 'put you off' going there in Summer .
It's a fantastic destination - in all seasons .
Cheer's ,
