While I was at the 4WD show I took the time to talk to the reps from Cooper Tyres.
They were very interested in what I had to say about them and to answer my question on the rapid wear rate when the tyres were new.
1. When the tyres leave the factory they are cured as much as they are going to be.
2. Tyres will get tougher the more they are used or stored, and this is to do with the oil that is in them when they are made. When used the tyres heat up and the oil is evaporated out quick and when stored the oil takes longer to evaporate but the tyre will get tougher.
3. The rapid wear was really rubber compression and not wear. The tread block depth was still reduced but not by leaving rubber on the road but by compression. That explains why in the first 6000km the depth of tread was reduced by 3mm, but has taken another 30,000km to reduce the depth of tread by another 3mm.
If the current wear rate stays the same 10,000km/1mm I should get another 70,000. That will not happen but I am a lot happier with the wear performance of the tyre with a little more information.
4. The other thing they said, If you have any questions about the tyres or you are not happy with your local supplier give the head office in your state a call.

so going by that formulae it would be better to buy the tyres leave them in the shed for 12 months to toughen up & you should get 100,000klm's out of them? then the walls would probably crack, too dry?or maybe the rubber compound is different on every batch they put in the vulcanizer? who knows?

Is this the same reason they all chip so much?

Brew69,
I don't know, but if you have a look at the photos that are on post 27305. the last photos are of the rear tyres and they do have some wear but they have not chipped on the sides of the blocks. This is one of the claims that they made on the STT.
Time will tell and I will keep you informed on the performance of the tyres.

Hi wayne...i hope you don't think i was having a dig. I just know a lot of people on the
forum talk about the chipping and i was seriously asking if this was the case.

Brew69,
I thought that it was a good question and the only answer that I could give was to have a look at the photos.
When the term "chipping" is used I assume it is referring to the edge of the blocks breaking away. If that is the case they have not chipped as yet.

Wayne or anybody else who knows the answer? BTW thanks for posted info about the wear of the tyres.
As far as I'm aware Cooper's are only available at Tyre Power Outlets here in the West. True or false??? If true and I bought a set how do I go about getting spares, if needed, in out of the way
places, ie up North in the Gascoyne/Pilbara/
Kimberley Regions. Don't want to get into a slanging match over this one verses that one but with my trip planning I want to get rubber I can match up if i run out of spare tyres that cannot be repared.
Cheers
Dunc.

When I was on
Cape York and needed a replacement tyre I took what I could get.
It was not a case of matching anything. I was in a small out of the way place and they only had one tyre the size I needed (10R15). Not an unusual size at the time. My choice was to take that tyre or run without a spare.
I would probably have had a choice if the tyre haad gone 4 days earlier in
Cairns, but that never happens.

Even filled out a competition form, Don't have a clue what I may win, for that matter not even sure I wrote my name correctly, had my mind / eyes on other things. LOL.
Sorry I missed you.
Your mates on the TJM stand don't know who you are, Wayne???? Who's Wayne??? from 4 different blokes on that stand.

John,
I was not working for TJM,only invited as a "4WD expert" to answer any questions. They didn't need all that much so I was having a good look around. All the people were from the
Melbourne area and would not known me.
I was approached by the Goodyear girls to enter the "competition" but I think that they only wanted to get my name and phone number.

Phil,
They had to go to America to get that answer.
The bottom line is that however
the block depth was reduced by 3mm in 6000klm the other 3mm has gone in 30,000klm.

Phil,
I did say in an earlier post that Cooper Tyres did give me a set(6) tyres to try out and give them first hand feed back. There were some other tour companies that were also given sets to try out, but I have not seen any feed back from them as yet.
What I have said to Cooper Tyres I have also put in post form on this site.
I hope that the feed back that I am giving to Cooper Tyres and the feed back that I am getting back from them will help others who are interested.
I have in the past used BFG muddies and they are the only other tyres that I can compare them to.
I am trying to be unbiased and tell it how as I see it and the fact that I do a lot of kilometres a year on a lot of different tracks I should get a good idea on how they perform.
When ever I have a post about the tyres it should be read with this post in mind.

Hi Wayne
Great
feedback about your experiences.
FWIW I think all tyres could be "cured " a little longer according to demand. the more they are wanted and snapped up, the less they cure. (3 mths min in the shed????)
When you, or me (have done with BFG AT's) or anyone buys tyres and store them for an extended period to harden them off, how is the warranty period established? Assuming your tyre
shop acknowledges you will have these fitted "12months" after purchase date with zero K's when fitted?
Am I clutching at straws?
Andy

Wisey,
The warranty would start when the tyre hit the road I would think. The tyre
shop would have to fit, balance and inspect the tyres before the warranty starts but this would have to be worked out with the tyre
shop.

if chipping is your concern, then buy the ST-C. I have and absolutely bullet proof on rocky roads.
I think it's unfair to bag "Cooper" the brand for chipping when they have a dedicated tyre for that purpose. If the ST-C chips for everyone on the market, then fair enough, they should be bagged. Different tyres for different applications.

I've got Cooper ATRs fitted and they are really good.
Been outback in WA with minimum chipping. The only problem I have had is that they retain the small marble stones easily. The mud terrain problem shed them more easily.
The reason they chip is the rubber is hard, which is why they last 80,000 km.
In the heat of the Simpson hard = good. Soft gets too soft and are prone to punctures.
Also, my wife goes through soft tyres every 15,000km - too expensive!
