Fuel problem/EFI

Hi all,
I have a 93 ford courier EFI 2.6 4x4, with a custom long range
tank.
When the fuel level gets to about 1/4 a
tank left..40L or so....when going down a
hill and having to brake at the bottom, the motor sounds like it wants to run out of fuel nearly stalling, and sometimes does. The new internal electric fuel pump is submurged with this amount of fuel in the
tank. The fuel pick-up is about 1cm of the bottom of the
tank.
It is like a surge but in reverse...LOL
Any advise will be greatfully absorbed.

Where is the Fuel Pick up located in the
tank? , If it at the back of the
tank and you are going down a steep
hill, that is probably the problem.

Yes the pump is at the back, in a "swirl pot", never use to have the problem though. Seems to have just started from nowhere..

Hmmm, you havent got
water in the
tank ?
Although
water would do it all the time when the
tank was low not just down
hill.
I have picked up
water from some out the back servo's a few times during my travels, when the
tank gets low it the car starts to miss, surg, pop and bang :-)
A bottle of metho cleans it up in one eazy go :-)

I usually only put a cup of meths in max. Sometimes just a cap full.
A whole bottle in one go would be interesting!

Brian. The amount of fuel in the
tank may be simply a coincidence ar a red herring. The throttle position sensor adjustment is very sensitive, and even if slightly out will cause surging as it trys to switch the ECU from an idle measssage to part throttle. The publication states that this adjustment is not to be touched (factory set), but I had success with my own 96' courier and two others that I worked on. The method of adjustment I used was to rotate the TPS until the rpm rose (part throttle signal) then rotate the oposite direction until the rpm falls to idle plus a little more. Check by making sure that the engine changes smoothly from idle throghto mid range throttle without any sudden jumps, especially just off idle. Hope this helps.............col

It is possible that when the pump was replaced,the fuel guage sender was bent slightly and your fuel is
well less than 1/4 .If the swirl pot is working ok it should keep enough fuel around the pickup until you are just about out of fuel.goodluck.

LOL madlee, good point mate, however, the bloody sender unit has gone mad..showing omly empty , then when it is out of the
tank and tested will work fine...Must be a earth issue, but have not yet worked it out...
I knew the fuel
tank had 60L in after I drained it to try to fix the sender unit and check the pump..
